"The Don Miguel is a 3 star hotel in the centre of Playa del Ingles. It is approximately 1.5..."

The Don Miguel is a 3 star hotel in the centre of Playa del Ingles. It is approximately 1.5 Km from the beach but a courtesy coach runs from the hotel several times of day. The main shopping centre, The Yumbo (a bit of a concrete jungle) is less than 200metres away.

This hotel is absolutely fantastic. The standards of cleanliness are second to none. I have never been in a Hotel where all the staff, without exception, are extremely friendly. Get to know your waiters they are a lovely bunch of people. The menus are pretty limited but the choices are huge. Even the fussiest of eaters would be able to find something they like. The food is well cooked and hot. Most of the meat is prepared by the chefs in the restaurant so you can tell it has just been cooked. You are given a set time for evening meal either 6pm or 8pm but these times are negotiable. Your table is yours for the week for dinner but at breakfast you can sit anywhere. Breakfasts take a little while to get into a routine, as you have to collect so many items from all over the restaurant i.e. coffee pots in one place, tea in another milk somewhere else and then you sit down and realise you have forgotten cutlery! Once you get to sit down the food is good with an amazing selection.
The hotel operates a no money policy so you just sign your docket whether it is for a bottle of water or an ice cream at the poolside. This means that you never have to take any money with you within the hotel grounds. The safe in the rooms are the cheapest I have ever had at 12 euros for 7 nights (again payable at the end of your stay).

The pool is advertised as heated but my cold feet would dispute this. The pool like the rest of the hotel is very clean but deep. It has an overall depth of 1.35 metres. I am 5’ 1” and the water came just above my chin around the edges and over my nose in the centre of the pool. There are ample sun beds and parasols and quite rigid removal of towels left unattended before 9am.

The majority of guests are German so you tend to hear more German than Spanish spoken. However if you can manage a few Spanish words you will be adored by the staff. The Thomson rep leaves out no details of flights home so it has to be looked up in the Portland file. There are many many Tui files but they are all German or Dutch.
Ok so if this hotel is so good why is it only 3 star? I think the following may contribute to this. It is situated on a very busy main road and the majority of the rooms face the road rather than the pool. There is no air conditioning only ceiling fans. There is no tea or coffee making facilities and no fridges in the rooms. To my mind these were the only problem. Do not stay in this hotel or resort if you are homophobic. It has a huge gay following. We were extremely lucky to have timed our stay to coincide with the drag queen competition and the carnival. The site was truly spectacular. The floats (all 80 + of them) took nearly 4 hours to go past. Some were full of children others full of drag Queens.

The resort is has many commercial centres within walking distances. My teenage daughter and I had the misfortune of going to the Kasbah centre where she got shop keepers grabbing her and trying to kiss her. Not a pleasant experience.

Transfer by coach from the airport to the hotel is about 30 – 40 minutes.
If you are unhappy with any aspect of the hotel just ask the staff are really obliging.
Would I go back to this hotel again – definitely Just wish it was in better location. (Portslade)

"This is an honest opinion about the Hotel Riu Miguel and island of Gran Canaria. The over..."

This is an honest opinion about the Hotel Riu Miguel and island of Gran Canaria. The over all marks are excellent 3* should be 4* for servce/food and bedroom comfort . Staff are all friendly the hotel the manager even asked us personally if every thing was ok i call that service. The hotel is 1 minuite away from the nearest shopping/ bars centre etc and it is 1500m from the beach but no worries as there is a free regular bus from and to the hotel. The rooms are fairly big, clean, plenty of draws and storage space for cases and clothes, nice bathroom but for all of you bidet lovers you are out of luck but who uses them any way?. Although our room was over looking the main road this wasnt an inconvinence as the patio doors blocked out most of the noise any way. The room has a ceiling fan which most 3* hotels dont even have in the canaries (hint take a pair of tweezers so you can pull the very short bead cord to alter the fan speed to your liking.
The food is superb with a wide choice of salads, and the hot dishes even better with most the meat, fish. etc being coooked on the spot in front of you a choice of fish, beef, pork. Poultry availble every night and a wide choice of vegetables at least another variety of potato as well as chips. The breakfast's are good but you only get either bacon or sausage(hot dog type)or ham either day you can also have any of the available cold meats too but i have found that out in most hotels any way but there was enough to choose from and fill you up till tea time any way.
The resort/hotel Playa Del Ingles wasnt as rowdy as i thought it would be even in the main season it is suitable for all ages and lifestyles. The resort has several shopping/bar centres not one strip as most resorts but it does give you a choice.
The island has blue bay parking in some areas this means you have to pay at the ticket meter although not really expensive look around cause on the other side of the road or around the corner it may or will be free or park on a crossing (joking) cause i saw the warden put a ticket fine on the blue bay but ignored the car on the crossing.
If you can hire a car as there is plenty of scenery to see.
So book your holiday at the Riu Don Miguel as you wont be dissapointed if i was i would have told you. (WEST MIDLANDS)

On arrival the hotel looks lovely. The reception area is lovely and clean. The room was nice, always clean and contained everything we needed. The breakfast in the hotel was lovely however the evening meal contained similar things every night and we ended up going out for quite a few meals. Meals were also severd at two intervalls, one at 6 o'clock and one at 8 o'clock, we were placed on the earlier sitting which we found to be too early. We had a really nice, private balcony overlooking the pool however some of the rooms seemed to have poorer views from the back of the hotel. The pool area was clean and pleasent, we went at the start of july which was nice but the pool did get very full towards the end of the holiday. The beach is quite a long walk from the hotel, taking about 25 minuets down hill, this was fine on the way down but was a bit of a hike on the way back up especially in the blazing heat, however there are plenty of taxi's or plenty of places on the way to break the journey. Theree were a few parasols available on the beach but most people bought their own, available for about 10 euros. The town centre is brilliant on a night and is just around the corner from the hotel, however i would ask for directions as it is quite hard to find as it is down a side street behind another hotel. The hotel entertainment on a night was good and varied. The entertainment manager spoke about 20 languages so everyone could join in. The hotel also offered some trips during the day such as a trip to the market. A trip to the water park is a must and the local bus service drops you right outside. On the whole the holiday was great, even though we never met our airtours holiday rep, the hotel was clean, with friendly staff and was in an good location. I would go back to the hotel and playa del Ingles, but I would have to go earlier as the heat was unbeliveble and sun burn is inevitable even when using a high factor and staying in the shade a lot, so watch out if you have young kids.

Having been to Puerto Rico the previous year, which i really enjoyed but was pretty quiet we thought we try the livelier Playa del Ingles. The main centre (Kasbah) was spoilt by people continuously pressurising you to go in their bars. It really really overpriced (£8 for a cocktail!) and very tacky. However the beach was large and beautiful, and we found some nice restaurants (although very german orientated along the front).
We found the Riu don Miguel spotlessly clean, but because our room looked over a main road quite noisy from the traffic. The pool was clean and the buffet breakfast fantastic.
Our only complaints were that it was just too far from the beach and centre, and we had to get taxi everywhere because of the 20 minute plus up hill walk and it didnt really feel like we were on holiday because of the distance.
Also despite being in a British brochure, we were the only English people at the hotel, it was completely overrun with germans! All the entertainment was in german, and the buffet dinner definitely catered for them (sausages etc..)
Don't waste your money paying for the reps trip to the waterpark the hotel is right by a bus stop and its much cheaper to buy your tickets when you get there.
Don't bother with sioux city, its dirty, the show tacky and terrible. Packed in like cattle onto benches, you cant get near the supposedly free bar and the food was inedible.
However the camel day was fun, definitely worth the money, if not a bit scary!
I would go back to playa del ingles again but id stay near or on the beach, its biggest asset.

This really is a very good hotel and probably deserves a four star rating. If there is a downside, it is that it is right on a very busy raod traffic island, but that said, we had no problem. It is a 15 minute walk from the beach, but just a few minutes from the shoping centre which at night provides all the entertainment you will ever need. The staff are very good and the food gave no cause for complaint whatsoever. I'm looking to go back again this year if we can get a good deal. We stayed at the Wakiki or however its spelt the year after, but the Don Miguel for me is far better. (Malvern)

this 3* hotel should be entered into the friendliest and comfortable hotel in europe. we have stayed in many 4 & 5* hotels over the years but i have to say that this beats them all on food, service and nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. the only drawback was probably that the swimming pool area was rather small.
