In a honest view this hotel has been classed as a 4 star !!!!!how i will never understand ,at most should be a 3star .Bedrooms dated, pool area not big enough unless you like been herded in like cattle ,be up early all beds round pool towels on by 8.00am not enough umbrellas, restaurant food again poor standard ,entertainment not my cup of tea. On the plus side right next to the ocean ,bar staff quite fast at service. If you like bingo not bothered about food like to drink alot and are get up early maybe the place for you, we would not return if it was free, just to finish as we arrived a family was just departing and they said ;best holiday they had ever had and we would love it;just goes to show we all different .thank god....cheers i (leeds)

The hotel was very nicely presented and the sea view from our balcony was amazing. We went out of season so the pool area wasn't too crowded, nor was there a shortage of sunloungers.
We went All Inclusive but were charged 30 Euro for the use of the safe in our room. The food was bland - 3 buffets a day, plus 'snacks'. The snacks were available from 3:30pm but consisted just of slices of cheese and limp salad. Ice creams were meant to be included but were usually out of stock.
The entertainment in the evening was ok, apart from one night when there was a Music Quiz which consisted of the guests having to guess how many people would dance to each record (fox-trot etc.) Needless to say, as the majority of the guests were english, nobody danced to any of the records so this made for a poor evening's entertainment. I wondered if it was a part of a conspiracy to get us to drink elsewhere.
The staff provided drinks when requested but were not particularly civil - presumably because most of us were All Inclusive guests so would not be tipping for each round.
Overall, the hotel was very nice but spoiled a bit by the surly staff. I'd expect to feel a bit more pampered at a 4* hotel.

"My Wife and I have just returned from the Hotel Cala Vinas (12 - 26 June 2004) after our 4th..."

My Wife and I have just returned from the Hotel Cala Vinas (12 - 26 June 2004) after our 4th holiday in a row there. Until now, we couldn't have faulted the hotel apart from a little friction caused by the mix of half board and all inclusive guests but, Oh boy, what a difference this year!

The hotel has now geared up for the all inclusive holiday makers and there are differences! Gone is the bottled wine in the restaurant, staff numbers have been reduced and the entertainment which was never top rate is now far worse than before.

Food quality is not as good although it is still acceptable but, the range of food available is less than last year. Although the hotel was 75% full during our stay, only 50% of the buffett section was in use at any one time causing long queues, especially on Football nights.

So, here it is in a nutshell, be prepared to get your wine and drinks for dinner from the Alhambra Bar before going into the restaurant. The wine is awfull and is dispensed from a pump giving white, rose and red which are all chilled (Have you ever drunk chilled red wine, it's awful!). There is less choice of food and oh yes, they have introduced the Wristband for all inclusive guests so you get tagged for the duration of your stay.

The wristbands don't actually work as a lot of the staff seem to ignore them and give the half board guests free drinks anyway. Some HB guests even offer to pay and sometimes the money is taken, other times it is not so take your chances if you're HB.

Apart from that, the hotel is still good value for money with all inclusive holidays available for GBP250 per week but, we will not be going back. Time to move on!

Oh, by the way, the staff are generally good but watch out for Mr Happy at the pool bar, you'll know him when you see him. We were lucky as we are known by the staff now but even we got blanked on a few occcassions by Mr Happy! (Swindon)

"After reading some of the reports for the cala vinas i had become concerned about what the..."

After reading some of the reports for the cala vinas i had become concerned about what the accomodation was going to be like. However we had a brilliant time. When we first arrived at the hotel we were very impressed with the large marble reception and brilliant location. The reception staff were very friendly and we were checked in within a matter of minutes. The hotel was worn in places ie the carpet on the stairs was faded in places and threadbound however on the the whole the stadard was good. Our room was on the 11th floor and had a perfect view overlooking the swimmingpool and sea. The rooms themselves were a little plain and i did feel a little below the standard of the rest of the hotel, however the bathrooms were brilliant (all tiled and very posh).
The pool area was always clean however we were their peaK season and we had problems getting a sunbed and in particular an unbrellar- the hotel operates a policy were if towels are put on beds before 8am they are removed. However we crawled out of bed at 8am every morning and half the sunbeds were already taken - people were going down before this staying with their towels untill 8am and then leaving them (however this is one of our only grumbles).
We were allinclusive and the food on the whole was very good. Drinks were brilliant and there was always a good selesction of food in the resturaunt although often if would be much of the same stuff ie chicken in sauce veal in sauce etc however i always found something and im a vegetarian and the quality of food tended to be very good. The snacks were the only other let down the ice creams were great you could help yourself to as many as you wanted however the snacks are served buffet style but not on hot plates so they go cold really quickly however we found we didn't need them.
We had heard the staff were discontent with so many all inners however we found the vast majority to be friendly (i even got a goodbye kiss from one on our last day!) they really appreciate a bit of effort such as manners which i found some of the germans in particular did not have!
The entertainment team consisited of 3 people - for the size of the hotel i would have expected more! However they did their best and they generally did well. We did meet a couple who had a 3 year old and enteretainement for him was poor. Eveening entertainment consisted of mainly professional shows and most were really good (especially Tim and his wife singers from the US).

All in all we had a great time and would go back if the offer came up again. Cala vinas does not have much to offer in terms of bars a shops but maguluf is about a 15 min walk away and a taxi is approx 3 euros. However we found magaluf to be dirty and smell of sewage- cala vinas should be seen as a well needed retreat from this!

London air were brilliant too!

I would definaelty recommend this hotel (Kent)

"My wife and I (48 & 43) booked via the Internet for a 7-day half board holiday to Calas..."

My wife and I (48 & 43) booked via the Internet for a 7-day half board holiday to Calas Vinas Hotel. I read through various reports prior to booking, a nice Hotel / Location would be waiting for us, although they all said it was quite. They weren’t kidding. On first impression a very nice 4 star hotel, all rooms overlooking the swimming pool and sea. Glorious! As with all pleasure, there is always pain. We booked half board, because that’s what the Internet offered us. Majority of the guest were All-Inclusive, and we felt the odd ones out, having to queue for our drinks along the all-inclusive guests, and the prices for soft drinks, alcohol etc. was inflated for us cash buyers. The all-inclusive guests seam to have a good laugh at the amount of money handed over for a small glass of orange. The food was repetitive and very un-imaginative, and the surrounding area was very quite. Only three restaurants and two supermarkets within walking distance, unless you wanted to walk to Magaluff, which we did a couple of times, but because of the hills, we taxied back. All in all, if you want a quite location, with a small beach, but, on a All Inclusive basis, this hotel could be for you. Me, I’m going back to Palm Nova next year.

"Unfortunately, this hotel does not deserve its four star rating. The size and design of the..."

Unfortunately, this hotel does not deserve its four star rating. The size and design of the pool is unsuitable for the approx. 500 guests during peak season. The shallow end is only about 10 feet long and packed with children, sometimes to the extent where it is difficult to get into the pool. There seemed to be just about enough sunbeds, although again, once everyone had arrived at the pool late morning, guests started to resemble sardines in a tin. The pool area was kept relatively clean. Entertainment during the day is provided for young children but nothing at all was on offer for the large number of teenagers. Evening entertainment varied from very good to shocking. The beach near the hotel is very small and shared with the Barcelo hotel across the bay and a number of apartment blocks.
The hotel operates only one bar at a time (there are two - one pool bar and one air-conditioned, quite nice looking one near the reception). At certain times, the bar was run by just one member of staff, which resulted in rather long waiting times. The drinks were of an acceptable standard (luckily, we went all-inclusive, bar prices are extortionate!). The rooms were ok but for a four star hotel, they seemed a bit small and too plain. Also, the furniture looked rather dated and scratched. If you're unlucky enough to have lively guests staying above you, constant shifting of chairs, etc. may keep you awake at night. The bathrooms on the other hand were very nice. The air-conditioning was also quite good and quite necessary in August. The food was average, better on some days than on others and maybe somewhat unimaginative on the whole. The waiter service was excellent, after a few days our waiter remembered what everyone usually wanted to drink. The view the hotel has to offer is very nice indeed and one of its strongest features. I have a feeling that the nice bathrooms and the view is what earned the place its four star rating. Otherwise, a three star rating would have been a far more accurate evaluation of this hotel, which still makes it a decent place to stay at.

Moved to this hotel by choice from Hotel America in calas de mallorca, but there was at least 100 transfered from hotels Lancaster and Honululu due to double booking, stayed between 1 and 14 nights
The hotel does not usually do all/inc but due to above changed its policy. This was great for us but some people had payed twice as much as the 'transferees' and were only on half board. As you can imagine they were not impressed.
The extra guests did create longer queues but only to be expected during peak weeks
The hotel itself was absolutely brilliant, especially the food and none of the above spoilt this.
Cala Vinas is a resort about 15mins walk/£2 taxi outside Magaluf, just far enough, with only 3/4 bars and a small beach.
