Having been to Puerto Rico the previous year, which i really enjoyed but was pretty quiet we thought we try the livelier Playa del Ingles. The main centre (Kasbah) was spoilt by people continuously pressurising you to go in their bars. It really really overpriced (£8 for a cocktail!) and very tacky. However the beach was large and beautiful, and we found some nice restaurants (although very german orientated along the front).
We found the Riu don Miguel spotlessly clean, but because our room looked over a main road quite noisy from the traffic. The pool was clean and the buffet breakfast fantastic.
Our only complaints were that it was just too far from the beach and centre, and we had to get taxi everywhere because of the 20 minute plus up hill walk and it didnt really feel like we were on holiday because of the distance.
Also despite being in a British brochure, we were the only English people at the hotel, it was completely overrun with germans! All the entertainment was in german, and the buffet dinner definitely catered for them (sausages etc..)
Don't waste your money paying for the reps trip to the waterpark the hotel is right by a bus stop and its much cheaper to buy your tickets when you get there.
Don't bother with sioux city, its dirty, the show tacky and terrible. Packed in like cattle onto benches, you cant get near the supposedly free bar and the food was inedible.
However the camel day was fun, definitely worth the money, if not a bit scary!
I would go back to playa del ingles again but id stay near or on the beach, its biggest asset.

Playa del Ingles lies about 18 miles from the airport at Las Palmas, and has one of the densest amounts of accommodation blocks, restaurants and bars you will find anywhere on the island. If your looking for good sandy beaches offering a large variety of water sports, this is the place to be. The downside is that they get very crowded, but a short walk along the front will bring you to the quieter area of San Augustin. Dozens of commercial centres and the area known as the Kasbah, offer you plenty of gift ideas and duty free. Although there are a few good quality hotels, most of accommodation consists of apartment blocks from where you can sample the delights of the hundreds of bars, clubs and the casino.
Like most of the popular European resorts, you'll find a huge amount of bars, pubs and restaurants here, serving every food combination you can think of. Plenty of fast food outlets give you the choice of burgers, pizzas and various fried chicken combinations with generous helpings of chips and salad if that's what you like. More traditional fare such as Sopa de Pescado (garlic stew with fish and tomatoes), Calderetas (lamb stew with almonds) and the fish specials Calamari (squid in batter deep fried) and Longostinos (giant prawns) are all worth a try. The local beers are as good as anything you'll drink back home and probably cheaper too. Wines and of course Sangria, are there to be enjoyed at every meal, and add to that the imported varieties and your drinking choice is endless.
