| | Comments: | We have just returned from what is simply one of the best holidays that we have ever had. I will try to be as informative and helpful in this report as I can to help you choose if this is the holiday for you. In our party we had, 2 adults and one 14 year old girl. After an early but trouble free flight we were met by cheerful, helpful reps who guided us to our coach for a 30 minute journey to the hotel. On the journey points of local interest were pointed out. There was a queue for check in but the in 2 action team were on hand to entertain the younger kids with circus skills etc to make it less painful. Our room wasn’t quite ready so we put our luggage in the luggage room and headed off for the buffet lunch.
Once in our room we found it clean and spacious. We had a one bed-roomed apartment overlooking the sea and pool (well worth the upgrade) we overlooked the bay towards Fengurolia with lots of fishing boats etc. The beds were two 4 foot singles which were comfortable and the sofa converted two 2.5 foot singles. (Fine for kids) The kitchen had a kettle, microwave and hob but no oven so tricky if you are self catering (there is only so much spag bog that you can eat) the balcony was spacious with table and chairs but no sun beds but there were plenty around the pools. To upgrade to fully inclusive for 4 days was 44 Euros per adult and 27 for a child per day with a 10% discount if you up graded on arrival day. I think if you upgraded for the fortnight, this reduced to 34.20 per adult and 19.80 per child. It is probably cheaper to do this when booking your holiday, but do your sums first. The whole hotel was massive with lots of indoor areas if it rained, with games rooms, pool table room , computer room with about 15 terminals and the in 2 action rooms and crèche.
I lost count of the swimming pools with something for all ages and abilities, from shallow pools with fountains to the pirate ship pool to the daunting wave pool which was very choppy and not for the faint hearted. The beach club opened on the last few days of our holiday and for 5 Euros and a 15 euro deposit we hired large inflatable rings to shoot the rapids and flumes which was great fun (there is a height minimum and not for kids under 7 years I guess)
The entertainment was full on with kids activities all day with raft building, canoeing, team games, circus skills, chocolate parties, short mat bowls, quizzes etc etc. Evening entertainment was varied with visiting acts such as a magic show, hypnotic show (hilarious), tribute boy band etc to a kids disco, family fun generation show (which I won) and bingo. From 11pm – 2pm the Irish bar was open which was too late for us. The team worked very hard all day, especially when it was raining to keep everyone entertained and smiling. We didn’t witness any drunken or bad behaviour from guests the whole fortnight.
The food was good with plenty of variety. Each day was themed such as Spanish, seafarers, Italian, and Chinese. With lots of fresh fruit, salads, and risottos etc. The good thing about all inclusive is that kids can try new foods and if they don’t like it they can resort to pizza etc.
The day trips are many, we tried the trip to Gibraltar which was great. It was 45 euros per adult. Warning (children over 12 are classed as adults for trips) the journey was 1.5 hours but with lovely views of the coast, mountains and valleys. The St Michael caves were fabulous with stalactites and stalagmites and the apes were cheeky and fun. You can also visit Tangiers but the weather postponed this trip. Other people went to Mijas and the lakes and mountains trips which I understand were good and free but you had to attend an hour presentation on bedding.
My daughter and I walked to the local beach which was lovely. If you exit the gates, cross the road and turn right, about 250 yards down you find a set of steps. It was a gentle walk down a lot but safe wide steps (probably not suitable with a push chair) to a lovely, sandy beach. We found lots of lovely shells and pretty stones. Not far along there are cafes and then a promenade with seafood restaurants. I understand that you can walk all the way to Fengurolia but you would probably need to take the bus back. We caught the bus to Belamadema which was lovely. If you get off at the Dolphin roundabout you come to the marina with its trendy bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours. There is also plenty of shopping here. We spent a pleasant hour or two walking the promenade. Warning, the Spanish taxi drivers are crazy and are hideous drivers. I would wait hours for a bus rather than risk stepping foot in another taxi.
One of the best things about this holiday was the genuine friendliness of staff. My daughter is learning Spanish at school and she was actively encouraged by all staff, from the maid to restaurant and bar staff to speak Spanish and her conversation skills have improved no end. All staff, both First choice and hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. It was like holidaying with your parents because any problems were sorted immediately such as extra blankets, pillows, transfers etc.
Well done First Choice, we will certainly be holidaying with you again. (But probably not in April as the weather was rather unpredictable)
