Comments:
Just returned from a wonderful holiday in Mahdia. Hotels situated outside Mahdia town, taxi ride 3TD into town, even if a bit hairy! Medina wonderful, entertaining. Locals friendly. I went with my 15 year old daughter, who eventually got used to the 'cheaper than Asda and 'how many camels for her?' It is clean, the sea is beautiful, beaches unspoilt and clean. Loads to do, if you look for it. Get the Metro train to Monastir, sit with the locals taking there buckets of fruit to market, (3 TD return for the two of us!), another interesting town with lots of history and medina, shops. Life of Brian was filmed here. In Mahdia walk to the Sailors cemetery, overlooking the old port, watch the sunset. Have a tea/coffee in the cafe in the medina by the Grand Mosque and watch the world go by. Market day on Friday, interesting stalls amongst the hundreds of shoes for sale. 2 day trip to the Sahara, wonderful, watch the sun rise on the salt flats, see the Troglodytes in Matmata, El Djem's ampitheatre and so much more... Nothing to do, our holiday was too short and we will probably go back next year to explore Sfax (take a louage taxi from Mahdia) and catch the train to Sousse. The only criticism we had was regarding the Panorama rep. He only had two trips running, Sahara and a Drag show, when all the other companies in the hotel had a choice of interesting trips (who needs a rep when you can make your own travel plans!) and we were not met at Monastir airport on arrival at 0300 and had to find the bus to the hotel amongst 50 other coaches to choose from in 30C. Also no rep to transport us to Monastir on return. Our room did not have BBC World or CNN so we were in total darkness regarding the alleged terrorists. The other side of the hotel had both these programmes, but our TV's did not receive them. The food was excellent, good choices and more than adequate. Staff were friendly and helpful. Yes! the Germans did leave their towels on the sunbeds and did not arrive to them until lunchtime. But we did notice that the sunbeds were being moved by other nationalalities and just leaving the towels there! People are wise to the Germans habits by now! All in all, it is what you make it and we had a great time, made lots of local friends, who helped us and advised us. A smile goes a long way and doesn't cost a dinah. Enjoy. (Preston)
