| | Comments: | The Delfin Azul is a very pleasant building. The swimming pool and surrounding area are spacious and pleasant. The rooms are nice, with reasonably comfy beds and great bathrooms and they all have balconies. The lunches served up by the pool-side bar are of very good quality and attractively priced.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and all speak excellent English. The standard of cleanliness is really excellent. The evening entertainment was mostly tribute bands and ranged from unwatchable to truly excellent (the Girls aloud tribute totally outclassed the real thing and the Abba tribute were brilliant singers dancers and players).
The beach is just a few hundred yards away - a five minute stroll. The beach is fantastic. Warm clean sea, beautiful white sand, a lot of people, but always plenty of space - the bay stretches for miles.
The weather was great.
Overall, it was a very successful holiday and we enjoyed ourselves. Generally, the hotel was a really nice place to be, but it does have a few significant faults that I think people should be aware of.
It is owned by Stil Hotels and their own web site stated that there is air conditioning. Well some of the public areas have it, but while the rooms have air con controls, they are permanently switched off! On asking reception about this they said it could not be turned on - a big black mark there!
Wi-fi access was only available by paying a big fee (4 Euros for 3 hours) and you could only receive it in the lobby area - this was annoying because we brought a laptop and thought it was reasonable by modern standards to expect free 24-7 internet access in all rooms.
A TV was provided in the rooms, but there were only 4 English speaking channels: BBC1, CBBC, ITV and Sky News. You couldn't even get BBC2 or CH4! Again way below modern standards.
The included breakfasts and evening meals are of a mediocre and sometimes poor standard. Luckily they're in buffet format, so you soon learn what to avoid. Just eat the plain stuff - which is mostly fine.
Anything that required putting some ingredients together and cooking it was frankly awful. The head chef needs changing, because the curent one simply doesn't understand how to cook food and make it taste nice - they even managed to make rough tasting scrambled egg! At breakfast, there was no pure fruit juice available - all you could get was orange squash!
You still have to pay for accompanying drinks, so we thought they would be of the same quality you'd get at the bar - wrong! We ordered Sangria at over 7 Euros and they gave us a bottle of the same cheap and nasty stuff that you could buy in the shops for one Euro! It was undrinkable and we never ordered it again.
If you ordered Sangria at the poolside bar it was lovely - served in a big glass jug, good quality stuff, with lots of fresh fruit and ice in it. That is what they should have served us in the dining room. It was false economy for them - if they'd served the proper stuff, we'd have bought one each day.
I know the food is free as part of a designed to a price package, but it fell below acceptable standards and was by by far the most disappointing aspect of the holiday.
Despite all these faults, it was still a good holiday - which speaks volumes about the general atmosphere and standards in the hotel (except the dining room!) and the exceptional quality of the nearby beach.
