Penang was fantastic, the Malaysian people are the friendliest I have ever met and travelling 7 or 8 times a year I have met a few locals. The hotel was on the beach and excellent value for money. The food all over the island was fantastic especially the seafood... including hige prawns and my personal favourite, lobster There is plenty to do for those inclined to do so, and the beaches are 'dream like' for those who dont. I would also recommend a local massage, available in the hotel. For those wanting to snorkel of dive, the trip to Langkawi is fantasic as there is a beach where white sharks swin round your feet in the shallows. This place should be more than a stopover and we plan to re-visit Penang, with another 2 weeks elsewere in Malaysia. Only drawback of the whole holiday was jellyfish...not really worth the risk of swimming in the sea... Well worth the 12 hour flight..and if you travel with Malaysian airlines, even that is not too uncomfortable.
