Comments:
I took my children on their first 'Beach' holiday to Vilamoura as I had been their in 1993 with their father and loved it. I always said I wanted to go back one day and I wanted to stay in the 'posh' hotel i.e. the Ampalius.

I have to say that whilst I still love Vilamoura, the hotel left a lot to be desired... We arrived at about 14.oopm and had to wait an hour before we could go to our room. The holiday rep from Thomas Cook did'nt even bother to help us check-in. She just dumped us at the door and left us to get on with it.

I upgraded us to a Junior suite and I was very disappointed with it as it was no better then an ordinary room. The only difference seemed to be that we had an extra sofa in the room as well as a larger bed.

The hair dryer in the bathroom did not work and everytime we had a shower we had a flood on the bathroom floor and had to use the towels to mop it up...

The kitchen was tiny and I could'nt bring myself to let myself or my children eat off it.

On our first day we went to the pool and my son fell over a broken umberella stand and sliced his leg. The staff were of no help and just told me to take him to the clinic. They did not offer to take us to the clinic they just wanted us away from the pool. They did not apologise or ask how it happened.

When I complained to Thomas Cook I was told the pool staff said my son was running but as he has cerebral palsy it is physically impossible for him to run like other children!!! I found the pool staff to be unhelpfull and liars.

One day we went to the Zoo Marine, which I totally recommened, and had a great time. We got back and put our things in our room and went to the pool.

When we got back we found our lights and tv were on!!!

I found an E111 card belonging to a Mr John Weatherall in our electric key slot!!!

I reported this to our rep and she told the hotel manager.. All he said was that the hotel cleaning staff used the cards left by customers as they could open the hotel rooms and the staff could get in to clean the rooms!!!

The cleaner had already been in as we noticed this when we first got back from the Zoo Marine and the card was not there then as I had used my own card and would have found the E111 in the slot then.

Its frightening to think that anyone can get into your room using one of these cards.

The hotel shops that are mentioned in the brouchures are just two gift shops and a hairdresser!!!

The hotel was in an ok location but I wish I had booked the Olmous hotel that I had stayed in in 1993 as it was much better.

I love Vilamoura and would live there but I would never book a holiday with Thomas Cook and would never set foot in the Ampalius ever again. My son still has a scar on his leg from the accident and the rep told us that we could claim our money back through the insurance but when I tried to claim they refused and took the hotels side.

How the Ampalius got its 'Mark of Excellance' I'll never know...
