| | Comments: | | We found the Dionysus Hotel ideally situated for the town and harbour area, the staff friendly and helpful and the accommodation well kept and clean. Visiting at the end of June we found the island was not too crowded and the beaches with enough room for a relaxing rather than fighting for space. According to locals the island can get quite busy in July and August. The Harbour area is virtually free of the usual seaside tat and all the more pleasant for it! The tavernas are on the whole superb, Alexandra’s particularly and the Owl Bar especially if you like to sample the local food, however beware the price of seafood dishes that can be ten times the price of other meals, 50 to 70 euros each!!. An evening in the harbour bars is relaxing an mercifully free from noisy discos, although some exist they appear to be low key and not too intrusive making it an island not suited to younger nightlife seeking visitors. Hiring a car is not essential as the local bus service suffices well enough during the day and taxis at night. The inner island is mountainous and should ONLY be seen by four wheel drive which would be great fun. We were persuaded to hire an ordinary small car for exploring, BIG mistake, the minor roads (ha,ha) are nothing more than BMX tracks wide enough for a single car with no passing places so be warned. All the beaches are worth a vist, some more than others i.e. Liminos, except for the main town and harbour areas that are a little drab and grubby. Don’t expect to see any sights other than that which nature left, all in all this island, compared to Skiathos, is quiet, peaceful and wonderfully relaxing. Skopelos town is a maze of streets up hill and down, totally fascinating and over 300 churches, do take the guided tour it helps. We will return and recommend both the hotel and island to anyone needing to relax. (BIDDICK) | | | First | Previous | Next | Last | |
