| | Comments: | Just got back from 2 weeks at the Sofitel Capsis, Ixia, Rhodes.
Firstly, the weather was superb - did not see a single cloud for 2 weeks. However, this side of the island can be (and was) VERY windy. On many days there was NO WAY you could let kids go anywhere near the sea as it was very rough. In any case, the beach in Ixia is terrible - very painful pebbles and gravel, fairly steep shelf into the sea - and to be honest the beach was not that clean. Really not a place to go unless you are a total beach nut.
Hotel was ok overall - large pool area, no lack of sunbeds, umbrellas could have been more plentiful though. Meals were ok - not the best we have had but not the worst either. We too noticed that when a conference was on the standard holidaymakers were very much the second class citizens.
One BIG word of caution - the price of food and drinks at the hotel is a TOTAL rip-off. We had to go to the nearby supermarket every day to stock up but the staff did not appear to care that the holidaymakers were consuming products from outside around the pool. To give an idea - at the hotel a small bottle of beer was over 4 Euros. Cans of coke etc were 2.50. A total joke. After a lot of complaints they did introduce a couple of happy hours (some at unsocialbe hours like from midnight to 1:00am!!) but even at half price the hotel was still more than outside.
Entertainment was total rubbish. Everyone went elsewhere. We felt sorry for those with young kids as there was little for them to do. And guess what, in the Thomson's brochure it says the beach is not suitable for young children. So where did they hold the kids evening 30 minute disco and party games ? - you guessed it - on the unsuitable beach in gale force winds with 4 foot waves pounding around. Many parents were livid - all the kids in their best clothes and coming back covered in dust and dirt!
Rhodes is a lovely island and overall we were ok but our 2 teenage kids were bored rigid and had to go into Rhodes town or Faliraki to do the things teenagers wanted to do. This added a litle worry factor - would they get there and back ok as SOME of the local taxi drivers seemed hell bent on breaking land speed records and seemed to get a warped kick out of frightening you.
Lastly, take lots of spending money as just like to rest of Euroland, the tourists are being taken for every Euro and prices have been hiked to ridiculous levels. When you work it out with the basic cost, the extra's, the spending money you can go long haul these days for the same money so the U.S, Caribbean, Mexico can expect a visit from us next year. The whole of Euroland seems to be a total rip off these days.
