| | Comments: | Our first holiday in Rhodes and we considered the island offered us a wonderful combination of: a plentiful amount of guaranteed sun with refreshing on-shore breezes, making even 40c feel bearable; friendly and helpful staff both outside as well as in the hotel; acceptable sea temperatures with reasonable beaches; a very impressive capitol with historic buildings and quaint alleyways, to make shopping - even for men - more interesting; and a joy to travel by car around the spectacular island scenery, again including many fascinating ancient and historic sites - especially Kamiros and Monolithos. Only problem was the mossies appreciated the island too! We recommend visitors take precautionary steps before arriving - try garlic or vitimin B maybe.
Having been to Lindos and the lovely Stegena and (the best?) beaches in 40c+, with the hot winds to cope with too, we would not consider a holiday in that part of the island - simply too uncomfortable for more than a day visit. Lindos acropolis was closed due to industrial action - low pay/long hours issue I learn - but only after climbing the 150 steps! As if a notice could'nt have been erected at the bottom of the climb.
Although the Oceanis Hotel has a brilliant pool and public areas, and our room overlooking the pool was perfect (air conditioning was the best we've experienced yet), the food was very average fare - plentiful but repetitious with tasty starters but unappetizing main courses. The staff we found exemplary although the animation/entertainment team at night appeared lacking in ideas, sticking to the same old routines each night - none of which contained anything remotely Greek in style.
We never return to places we've been to on holiday but we might make an exception with Rhodes in a few years time because of its wonderful climate. We would choose to stay in Rhodes Town though, as the beaches there are better and both the activities and atmosphere are more lively than in Ixia. We would not go all-inclusive again as we prefer to have more 'control' over the choice of food we eat - but for that and its quiet location, the Oceanis catered for most of our needs more than adequately. We had the last two weeks in June, but how the hotel resources and staff manage in high season we wonder as the pool and surrounding area became noticably busier in the second week. By then we had to get our towels on our preferred sunloungers by 7.45am.!
Finally, we booked our holiday through ********** Holidays and found their service excellent as were their prices! We did not need a holiday rep but they can supply you with support should you need it - although this was thankfully never needed. Thank you Rhodes for your welcome hospitality and a tonic amidst Britain's disasterous summer!
