| | Comments: | We were very impressed with the Alexandra beach. On booking we were a little apprehensive as we thought being in Psalidi, gleaned from other reviews we had read, that we would be quite isolated. On the contrary, we felt we were perfectly located. Alexandra beach is nearer to Kos town than the main part of Psalidi, which is literally a scattering of hotels and apartments along a main road with little charm or appeal. We were about 20 mins stroll from Kos town, but far enough away for it to be a very peaceful location over looking both the sea and mountains. The apartments were kept very clean and all of the staff were friendly. We were surprised and delighted that we had free air conditioning, we had expected to pay extra, as a result we had lovely cool rooms when the temperatures were soaring into the late 30's+ outside, and comfortable mozzy-free nights. We found the pool area became noisy at times, so not especially peaceful there, but noted when certain guests went home it was much better. We never ate from the pool bar, this tended to be a little pricey and consisted of the usual hotdogs/burgers and chips etc. There are a choice of well stocked supermarkets close by, the nearest directly over the road from the hotel. The beaches are not spectacular, being narrow and a mixture of sand and shingle, but they are clean and well kept with friendly attendants, and some have the use of free lilos or 'sea-matresses', meaning its not necessary to carry your own down for the children to play on. The ones closest to the hotel were always very peaceful and quiet. We spent most evenings sat outside one of the many little tavernas that line the beach from Psalidi up towards Kos town, looking over the sea to Turkey's twinkling lights just a short distance away. A two course meal for 4 including wine cost in the region of 60euros, which seemed comparable to other places we have visited in Greece. We chose not to go into Kos town in the late evening, preferring the quieter venues of the tavernas to the late night revellry. Our 2 teeneage boys (14yrs) wandered down alone one night and found that even at their age they were being hassled to go into bars. That doesn't float our boat now, but doubtless will appeal to some. We preferred Kos town in the daytime. A mixture of the ancient archeaology and history, shops, a lovely harbour and cafe culture. Hint - if you decide to go on any boat trips, it pays to browse the many little independent tour operators down in the harbour rather than booking with your holiday rep. We visited the volcanic island of Nyssiros for a quarter of the price we would have paid through Thomsons, this included the coach transfer to the volcano (incidentally worth the visit albeit extremely smelly!) . We never visited Turkey, although it's less than half an hours journey from Kos town. Our Rep admitted to us that the temperature there in august was barely tolerable. We hired a jeep for a couple of days to explore Kos. We found this was a day too much as the island is tiny, but it did serve to highlight that we were staying in the place best suited to us. There seems very little else of interest around the island other than some beautiful beaches. We visited the thermal spring (another 'smelly' venture)but found it disappointing, altho granted very hot! Our preferred method of transport was pushbike. These were rented from next door to Alexander Beach for as little as 3euros each per day or reduced rates for whole week. We biked to the Asklepion (allegedly the worlds first hospital) one hot day. it really is just another bunch of ruins, and where as all the other bunch of ruins (bar the fort in the town) are free to wander around, the Asklepion charges to enter. Disappointingly this doesn't mean that there has been any effort at all made to preserve or reconstruct any of the building, or even to explain the history of the building. It was all uphill to bike there, but, despite the lack of 'education', with lovely views once achieved, and great fun free-wheeling back from (watch out for the Turkeys in the road!). My own personal favourite day was when my husband took the boys on an organised scuba diving trip for the day (again this can be booked in the harbour - holiday reps use the same divers). I had the most relaxed day alone on a beach with a book, occasionally plunging myself into the sea to cool off and enjoying a 2 hour lunch alone at a nearby taverna looking over at Turkey. Wonderful. The boys and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the scuba diving too. It was the first time they had ever done it and found the tuition and the professionalism of the instructors excellent.
Overall a fantastic holiday. I said i wouldn't go again though on the basis that although i loved it, i've 'done it' (Kos). On saying this i have now infact booked another holiday to exactly the same place for June 2005 with a friend with the intention of spending more days just relaxing on the quiet beach, eating in quiet tavernas and looking out at turkey shimmering in the sunshine!
