Aphrodite Beach Club is a spacious complex situated at the beach of Gouves. It is run by a large Cretan family, that tries to show to its guests the Cretan tradition, and what Crete is all about. The village of Gouves offers a wide variety of shops, traditional restaurants and bars. Ideal resort, centrally situated on the island for all those who want to get to know Crete either by a renting a car, or by bus. The hotel is located 18km out of Heraklion and only 7km away from Hersonissos a town known for its nightlife. The hotel was built in 1979, and was extensively renovated in 1998. The complex consists of four buildings which are Aphrodite, Apolon, Ermis and Athina. | | Comments: | We stayed at the Aphrodite Hotel Oct 07 for 2 weeks. The hotel from the outside looks lovely (indeed we had stayed in Gouves at the Marie Evans Apartments 5 years ago, and looked longingly at the Aprhrodite hotel) How wrong could we be in that it looked like somewhere where we would love to stay!
On our first day we checked in, we were given a room not in the main hotel, but across from the main building. The room was tiny and the balcony was totally overgrown with plants, and quite clearly had not been cleaned in some time. On complaining to reception (the most surly faced receptionist one could ever meet) they did agree to give us a room in the main hotel the following day, which they did. The actual room we eventually got was ok, not great, furniture old, and the carpet looked a bit dubious/worn. Not really what we anticipated at all. The balcony was OK, just enough room for 2 chairs and a very small table.
As far as the facilities in the hotel go, the bar is OK, but we did feel a bit 'ripped off' by the all inclusive drinks menu itself, and the fact that we could only get drinks until 11pm I think.
The food was simply awful. It was slop. By the 2nd week, we actually started to break out in a sweat, when we exited the lifts in the main lobby and got a 'waft' of what was coming out of the dining room. I really like my food, and dont consider myself to be that fussy, but it was so bad, on the 2nd week we ate out every night. We just could not face the dining room at all.
The staff at the Hotel were just plain surly. The man who I assume was the Manager, stamped around the dining room, watching your every move, I felt like the whole thing was ran like a prison camp, it was not a relaxed atmosphere at all.
The only praise that I have for the Aphrodite is for the tireless animation team who worked their socks off to try and ensure everyone had a good time, which given the standard of the hotel and the general unhapiness of the guests, was quite a task in itself. They tried so hard to involve everyone in the activities during the day, and provide fun entertainment in the evenings. Well done them!!
Oh and before I forget, Ladies whatever you do, DONT put any expensive clothing into the hotels laudry service, because they clearly dont understand washing instructions in english. Your clothing will be returned to you looking like a crumpled rag 2 sizes to small.
Would we go back to Gouves ... YES. Would we stay at the Aphrodite NO WAY!!
