| | Comments: | Tenerife is an island of two halves, the north is green and lush and very different from the purpose built resorts of Christianos and Americas.
Puerto is in the nicest sense stuck in a time warp, no discos, no all night drinking just a charming picturesque town lively without being rowdy, not for the 18 to 30 crowd.
Very cosmopolitan with lots of Spanish people on holiday from the mainland. Black sand beach looks a bit odd but feels like regular sand. Shopping caters for all tastes and budgets.(Not one timeshare tout all week)
Loro Parque is the best animal park I have ever been to, would you ever expect to see a man hugging an Orca ? and it is all driven by one mans love for the animals, they are all there for a reason whether rescued, endangered or on a breeding programme.
Get the Gold Tour ticket and enjoy some behind the scenes insights as well as reserved seats for all the shows and a tapas lunch. Grandsons loved it.
Weather is sometimes cloudy (use the sunscreen anyway or burn) always hot but never overpowering. Refreshing sea breeze most days.
Hotel El Tope - old fashioned hotel with old fashioned standards and service, we had superior rooms with sea view and they were spacious, spotlessly clean with a huge terrace with table, chairs and sunbeds. Never any problem with a sunbed by the pool no matter what time of day, the pool attendant will bring a mattress and umbrella for you and won't allow towels on unoccupied beds.
Buffet meals with large variety and a staff who are professional and know their jobs which isn't always the case in holiday hotels. And finally - yes there are the infamous 80 steps into town but they are in stages, going down is easy (and I am middle aged and unfit )and a taxi back will cost you 3 euros and there is even a courtesy bus twice a day.
