The Estrela do Vau Apartments are set in gardens with two swimming pools, two kilometres from the lively seaside town of Praia da Rocha. The 174 apartments over four floors have neutral decor, bright fabrics, functional furnishings and balconies. All have kitchenettes with cookware, dishes and microwave ovens. They are equipped with satellite television, direct-dial phones, dial-up Internet connections and climate control.

We have stayed at these apartments many times over the last 5 years and always had a very good time. Clean, tidy and well appointed the apartments are a pleasure to occupy.

Pool are is excellent with plenty of sunbeds. You WILL need a car if you want to get the best from your visit as the nearest ' civilization' is a 5 euro taxi ride away.

Multiply this by the number of trips you will take and it adds up to almost what a car costs from the airport.

Portimao has amassive supermarket with everything you will need so dont use the on site shp as the pricesare extortionate.

To be fair Estrela do Vau is a nice place.. if your into golf, while we were there we felt like we were in a oap rest home. The kids were bored stupid there is nothing for our age group at all unless you calss the tennis courts at 7.50 an hour orthe pools which were freezing. The entertainment cosisted of a woman singer on monday which was dreadful karaoke tues which no one sang wed a man on a organ thursday karaoke again and friday a parrot show that lasted 10 minutes with the other hour guys taking pics of your kids with the parrots at ten euros a pop, sat nothing, sun nothing and if your like us unfortunate to go for two weeks you had to sit through it all again the following week, we had to get two taxis everywhere because it was in the middle of nowhere unless you love long long walks, pria da vau was a nice beach with a few bars the patrisimo was very friendly bar look out for lueege he is great fun and brill with kids. Alvor great if you drink and eat none stop same stuff different shop bit like blackpool lol.

"This holiday was really lovely it was peaceful and the resort was beautiful. the apartments..."

This holiday was really lovely it was peaceful and the resort was beautiful. the apartments was clean and tidy and the staff were very helpful at all times there are 3 pools which is good so plenty of room when we were there the kids club was awful though it said for ages 3 to 8 but it was activities for much younger kids not a problem for us my kids wont go!!

The accomodation was set on a slight hill about a ten min max walk to the sandy beach. the beach was lovely and clean and tidy and there are loungers if you need them. it is a quiet resort though with little going on but for us this was ok and for a week it is ok but for 2 i am not so sure. You could get bored.
Alvor is a taxi ride qway costing 3.90euros each way..this place has lots of resturants and some shops and is great for fresh fish we went to a place called 'sereia' and had the most amazing sea bass. you must try it.
Next is Praia Do Rocha this you can walk to taking 20 ish mins or a taxi is about 4.60 euros this is busier and has more shops.
Zoo marine is a must the dolphin show was so good and for about 100 euros you can swim with the dolphins.it has rides birds of prey and sea lions.
For shopping go to Portimal and go to continental of lidls for food as the hotel shops rather pricey as they always are but it does do fresh bread daily.

Overall i loved this holiday i wanted to relax and not do alot we alternated between the beach and the pool the kids played and made friends we ate out we ate in we just relaxed. The weather was good ranging from 32 for first 3 days then about 23 for last 4 days but most of all no rain...

Enjoy Portugal.

"We stayed at the 4star Estrela do Vau in Praia do Vau. The Hotel Foyer itsself was..."

We stayed at the 4star Estrela do Vau in Praia do Vau. The Hotel Foyer itsself was excellent and the staff extremely friendly. We had a one bedroomed apartment with Kitchen, it was extremely roomy, however, the bathroom let the room down, it is in serious need of a makeover and I would actually rate this part of the apartment a 2star. Also, there were some plug sockets in the apartment that were falling off the wall or half missing. The beds were extremely hard and the pillows lumpy so be prepared! I welcomed my bed when I got home. The poolside area was good and sunbeds were always available. The restaurant and bar were also nice, we ate in the restaurant once and it was ok.

Praia do Vau itself is extremely quiet and there is nothing to do so you need to go to Alvor or Praia do Rocha which is approximately 5 Euros each way in a taxi. The Hotel arrange for taxi's to be outside the hotel during the hours of 19.00 to 21.00 so they make it really easy and stress free for you, they always book one for you if there aren't any outside.

Our favourite place was Alvor, it has some of the best fish restaurants we have ever been to and there is a real buzz at night and it's extremely friendly.

We are definately returning to Portugal in September and the hotel on the whole was very good but I would class it as a good 3star rather than a 4star. It does need redecorating.

"We thoroughly enjoyed this hotel. After reading various mixed reports we went with an open..."

We thoroughly enjoyed this hotel. After reading various mixed reports we went with an open mind but hoping for the best. The holiday started with a long bus journey which took 1.5 Hrs but the bus was cool and the rep was friendly. At the hotel reception the very nice man changed our room (without asking) as he thought it would be more suitable for the family. The 1-bed apartment was clean and spacious. The bathroom was OK and the shower was excellent. The morning introduction with the rep was informative but I did wonder why they brought a timeshare tout for a local hotel. The pools, play area, snack bar, gift shop, and bar were all excellent. We went half board and apart from limited choice for the adults I could not fault the standard. Also the waiters were all very pleasent and responded at our attempts at speaking the lingo. The area was nice, we did not go far but the Taxi service to the hotel was excellent. When we did venture out we realised that Estrela do Vau was one of the better hotels around, fortunate that it was away from busy roads and other properties. The beach down the road is a little gem and should not be missed. We took a pushchair down without problem but it is a dirt track and does get a little steep in places. The supermarket is expensive on site but as we were half board we did not need alot. The wine was reasonably priced but most things seemed expensive. Entertainment was limited at the hotel, they did do a good BBQ night but the parrot show was twice mysteriously cancelled much to my childrens displeasure. We did not go to the Karaoke night as it was too late for our little ones. The hotel was noisy until 1:00am after the BBQ night but some strong notes put up around the hotel the morning after quashed any further disruption. The apartment was cleaned, beds made & towels changed every day which helped alot. On our last day we had to vacate the room by 10:00am but we asked for a late check out because of our young family and as we were not leaving until 3:45pm. We were very happy when they allowed us to stay in the room until 2:00pm. This really made the last day go so smoothly and typified the attitude and helpfulness of the staff. To sum up I would totally recommend this hotel to families with young children who want to spend time with them but not to couples or people wanting late night entertainment.

"The hotel was definately not a 4 star as advertised in the brochure. The hotel is pleasant..."

The hotel was definately not a 4 star as advertised in the brochure. The hotel is pleasant but is beginning to show signs of age and becoming jaded.

The pool area is awful, the photographer in the brochure was obviously very skillful because the area was untidy and total bedlam, we went to the sea everyday because of this, and fortunately the beaches are gorgeous. If you've requested a room with a sea view, make sure you take your binoculars with you so that you can see the see. The on site supermarket is extortionate, most goods are 3 times what you will pay else where !!!!!!!

My advice is go too Alvor, which is a lovely fishing village, next time we will go there !!!!!!!!!!

"This was our first time in Portugal & driving from the airport some areas seemed to be a..."

This was our first time in Portugal & driving from the airport some areas seemed to be a concrete jungle. Luckily this accommodation is just outside Alvor, where high-rise buildings are banned.

Check in was very quick & the apartment (2 bedrooms, lounge area with 2 sofas, 2 toilets 1 with shower & 1 bath/shower, a small kitchen area with fridge freezer, hot plates, microwave, toaster, kettle & coffee machine) was very good & clean.

There were 3 air-conditioning units. 1 in each bedroom & 1 lounge, all very good & quiet.

We were on the ground floor & had an apartment facing the pool area. Patio area had table, chairs & 2 sun loungers.

Maid service / cleaning every day & was very good.

The Rep gave lots of good info on where to visit / see.

There is a small bar & restaurant at the front of the apartment block, which does basic food. Food is OK but it is better to eat in Alvor. There is also a snack bar by the pools (1 infant & 2 adult), again good for snacks but not cheap. There is also a grocery shop, which is good for any item you forgot at the supermarket but is very expensive.

The 2 nearest towns are Portimao & Alvor. We went to Portimao to go to the supermarket & that was it. Alvor is a small fishing town with cobbled streets. We went most days to the beach at Alvor & then for lunch at one of the fish restraints along the front. There is good selection of palaces to eat & drink & relax both for lunch & in the evening.

We hired a car which made life easy. It is definitely worth going to ZooMarine. Go early & spend the day. Live shows, rides & pools. Bring sandwiches or buy snacks there, the place is very well run & no large queues for anything. If you continue towards Faro from ZooMarine (about 5km) there is a large shopping centre, very good value & plenty of places to eat.

I would avoid the Algarve Zoo / Kids world. Not a lot to see, half the rides not working or you have to pay extra & long queues for food & drinks.

I would recommend the Alvor area & these apartments to any family looking for a nice relaxing holiday.

"This accommodation is lovely and of a high quality. It is a little bit remote if you like..."

This accommodation is lovely and of a high quality. It is a little bit remote if you like your nightlife but perfect if you like peace and tranquility. There is a minibus service for a nominal fee to the nearby towns of Alvor, Praia da Rocha and Portimao. Taxis are fairly reasonable 5-6 euros to the bigger resorts.
The supermarket is pricey - better to take a taxi to the MODELO hypermarket nearby and stock up on essentials.
The pool bar serves good snacks and the service is friendly. The restaurant wasn't great when we ate there but it was always quite full so maybe we went there on a bad night.
In nearby Praia Da Rocha the Bacchus Bar is worth a visit. Happy hour is from 9-11.30. The Pussycat Bar is child friendly and has a weekly quiz which was a bit of craic.
The beach at Praia da Vau is definitely worth a visit. It's about a 15 minute walk from the appartments but has some bars etc. Il Timone is a good place to eat if you like Italian food.
A visit to Zoomarine is a must if you have kids. There is so much to do there- book at reception.
I would return here without hesitation. Have a good holiday!
