General Information
Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands, lying about 140 miles off the east of the mainland. The island has a largely rugged northern half, contrasting with a much gentler southern area giving way to a string of sandy beaches. The capitol Mahon, with it's large natural harbour, is in the east, 2 miles from the airport. The resorts are nearly all purpose built, and dotted along the southern coast. Despite of all these developments, Menorca remains relatively unspoiled compared to it's neighbours
Local Food
In Menorca you will find a variety of restaurants to suit all tastes, including British, German and Italian fare. There are however a wonderful variety of Balearic dishes to sample in local restaurants. Much of the local cooking is simple peasant fare made from local ingredients. Some local dishe s to look out for include: pa amb oil (olive oil bread), Sombrasada (local sausage), Sopa Mallorquinas (vegetable stew), Tumbet (ratatouille), Seafood dishes are very popular with red mullet, lobster and squid being high on the menu. Don't forget to try 'tapas' but remember that while it is the practice to eat a free bite of 'tapas' with your beer at the bar on the mainland in the Balearics you will have to pay for the privilage. Local and Spanish wines are good and inexpensive. Try Cava (a sparkling wine), Sangria (a drink made of wine, brandy, lemonade and fruit),or Jerez (Spanish sherry)
