General Information
Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, and lies nearly 120 miles off the Spanish mainland. With it's olive and almond trees, pine woodlands and sandy beaches in the south, the popularity of the island does not diminish in spite of all the development in recent years. The main tourist areas are located around the bay of Palma in the south-west and on the eastern coast. Palma itself, offers a wide variety of history and culture, with lots of entertainment and great shopping facilities. The airport is about 5 miles east of the city
Local Food
Majorcan food tends to be quite hearty and is often pork and bread orientated. Pork is the staple meat on the island. There are some fantastic local chorizo sausages called sobrasada which are delicious. Fish also forms a substantial part of the Majorcan diet, however the waters around Majorca have been fished dry and much of the fish comes from elsewhere. Tumbet a vegetable and potato soup is tasty and Majorcans often start their meals with this. While ther are Spanish dishes to entice all holidaymakers those who like British food will not be disappointed. In most of the tourist resorts you will find many fast food outlets, all day breakfasts, and even the traditional British roast dinner - all at reasonable prices. The local beer is San Miguel and it is available in most bars and restaurants.
