In the winter, the Alps and the somewhat less pricey Pyrénées, Vosges and Corsica offer more than a hundred excellent skiing facilities, both for downhill and cross-country. Probably the most famous ski resort is Chamonix, the site of the first Winter Olympics held in 1924. Chamonix is set at the foot of Europe's highest mountain, the incomparable Mont Blanc at almost 16,000 feet. There is an excellent selection of bars and restaurants in this cosmopolitan resort as well as regular music festivals. Other ski resorts worth a mention are Tignes set high in the Savoie Alps which has all year round snow and Serre Chevalier which is set in the Southern Alps. Serre Chevalier has almost 250 kms of ski runs which link 4 villages, and a very relaxed and informal Apres-ski atmosphere.
