General Information
Salou is about 8 miles south of the airport in an area dominated by apartments with the odd hotel. Salou itself is quite a new resort with a wide range of shops, from high class boutiques to the basic supermarkets. There is however a market held in the old part of town on a Monday which is well worth a visit. Most of the beaches are blue flag, and you will find every type of water sport available, from pedalos to windsurfing. The famous Port Aventura theme park lies near by and together with the go-karting just outside the resort children will be well occupied. For the shopaholics you will find the typical souvenir shops, high class boutiques and supermarkets. At night there is a choice of hundreds of pubs, music bars, discos and night clubs many of which stay open until the early hours of the morning. An elegant palm tree lined promenade ensures the right atmosphere for an evening stroll.
Local Food
Like most of the popular European resorts, you'll find a huge amount of bars, pubs and restaurants here, serving every food combination you can think of. Plenty of fast food outlets give you the choice of burgers, pizzas and various fried chicken combinations with generous helpings of chips and salad if that's what you like. More traditional fare such as Sopa de Pescado (garlic stew with fish and tomatoes), Calderetas (lamb stew with almonds) and the fish specials Calamari (squid in batter deep fried) and Longostinos (giant prawns) are all worth a try. The local beers are as good as anything you'll drink back home and probably cheaper too. Wines and of course Sangria, are there to be enjoyed at every meal, and add to that the imported varieties and your drinking choice is endless.
