Weather Information Average Temperatures General Information Machico lies about 4 miles from the airport and is a large fishing village with a church and fort. The small amount of hotels reflect the quiet and peaceful atmosphere found here, but the pebble beach has problems with pollution, so forget the swimming. Not a lot of shops, but the basics are catered for, while the evening entertainment consists of a few bars, with the rest provided by the hotels. Local Food Relaxing and traditional restaurants are the main source of eateries here, and although there are not many of them, the quality and service is excellent. Local dishes like: Caldeirada ( fish stew ), Cataplana ( pork and clams stewed in a wok ), Espetadas ( skewered meat ) and Arroz de Polvo ( octopus pieces in onions and tomatoes ) are always worth a try, but the burger and chips brigade will be disappointed. Local beers, wine and port are all very good and served with most meals.
