General Information
Vilamoura lies about 15 miles from the airport, and is a purpose built resort with a pleasant marina and three '18 hole' golf courses. There are two beaches, with Falesia the biggest, approximately 5 miles away. A great variety of water sports can be tried here, from windsurfing to paragliding, but the shopping is quite limited with some supermarkets and souvenir shops situated around the marina. An abundance of decent hotels, from basic right up to luxury 5 star make up the bulk of the accommodation in the resort, while at night, lots of bars, some discos and a casino will ensure there's enough entertainment to keep you going throughout the evening.
Local Food
Vilamoura has a wide variety of restaurants and bars to suit alltastes in food and drink, including English and Portuguese, with a staple diet of meat, fish, vegetables and fresh fruit, the Portuguese traditional food is extremely healthy, and wine is the ubiquitous table beverage. The ever-growing influence of the tourist can be seen here, with burger bars and pubs springing up everywhere. Chips are served with all meals, if that's what you want, but the traditional dishes of: Arroz de Polvo ( octopus pieces in onions and tomatoes ), Caldeirada ( fish stew ), Cataplana ( pork and clams stewed in a wok ) and Espetadas ( skewered meat ) are all excellent and well worth a try. The local beers and wines are of a very high quality, with special imported ones available in most bars and restaurants.
