Weather Information Average Temperatures General Information Monte Gordo lies about 35 miles from the airport near the mouth of the river Guadiana. The very long sandy beach is backed by dunes, and has a great variety of water sports to try. Hotel and apartment blocks dominate the accommodation here, while the supermarkets and souvenir shops ensure all your holiday requirements will be taken care of. The night brings several bars and a casino to life, with the hotels providing some entertainment and cabaret shows. Local Food Alvor's fishing quay has some excellent seafood restaurants, offering fresh fish specialities daily. There are also alternative eateries serving a more International type menu. With a staple diet of meat, fish, vegetables and fresh fruit, the Portuguese Traditional food is extremely healthy, and wine is the ubiquitous table beverage. traditional dishes of: Arroz de Polvo ( octopus pieces with onions and tomatoes ), Caldeirada ( fish stew ), Cataplana ( pork and clams stewed in a wok ) and Espetadas ( skewered meat ) are all excellent and well worth a try. The local beers and wines are of a very high quality, with special imported ones available in most bars and restaurants.
