| General Information | | Lagos lies about 52 miles from the airport, and has a harbour and fortress at the heart of its centre. Accommodation is plentiful, with decent standard hotel and apartment blocks everywhere. A market in the central shopping area provides a break from the normal souvenir and gift shops you see here, but it's only on once a month. Several beaches of good quality sand, offer a multitude of water sports, and at night, apart from the numerous amount of bars, there is a disco and night club to keep you busy throughout the evening. | Local Food | | With a staple diet of meat, fish, vegetables and fresh fruit, the Portuguese traditional food is extremely healthy, and wine is the ubiquitous table beverage. The ever-growing influence of the tourist can be seen here, with burger bars and pubs springing up everywhere. Chips are served with all meals, if that's what you want, but the traditional dishes of: Arroz de Polvo ( octopus pieces in onions and tomatoes ), Caldeirada ( fish stew ), Cataplana ( pork and clams stewed in a wok ) and Espetadas ( skewered meat ) are all excellent and well worth a try. The local beers and wines are of a very high quality, with special imported ones available in most bars and restaurants. |
