| General Information | | Armacao da Pera lies about 30 miles from the airport, and is a rapidly developing resort with nearly every type of accommodation on offer, from cheap apartment blocks to luxury 5 star hotels. The main beach is long and sandy, but beware the dangerous currents when indulging in the various water sports. With two commercial centres and a reasonable range of souvenir shops, your holiday needs will be well catered for, and a trip just out of town takes you to the waterpark and marine park. Bars and discos are the main source of evening entertainment, with the hotels providing some shows and the odd cabaret | Local Food | | With a staple diet of meat, fish, vegetables and fresh fruit, the Portuguese traditional food is extremely healthy, and wine is the ubiquitous table beverage. The ever-growing influence of the tourist can be seen here, with burger bars and pubs springing up everywhere. Chips are served with all meals, if that's what you want, but the traditional dishes of: Arroz de Polvo ( octopus pieces in onions and tomatoes ), Caldeirada ( fish stew ), Cataplana ( pork and clams stewed in a wok ) and Espetadas ( skewered meat ) are all excellent and well worth a try. The local beers and wines are of a very high quality, with special imported ones available in most bars and restaurants. |
