General Information
The Costa Dorada or golden coast runs from the Costa Brava in the north down to the popular resort of Salou. Consisting of 45 miles of sandy beaches, there are a few large resorts Salou and Cambrills being the main tourist centres, and several small fishing villages. The local airport at Reus is ten miles west of Tarragona. Golden sand, warm blue seas and ever present sunshine plus the amazing Port Aventura theme park make this still a favourite for the British holidaymaker.
Local Food
The Costa Dorada is infamous for it's wide variety of restaurants serving British cuisine but it is well worth seeking out the authentic Catilan restaurants serving regional specialities such as 'tapas'. Tapas are small tasty dishes such as Serrano ham, baby stews, casseroles, sausage and vegetable/fish fritters etc etc which are made to accompany drinks and good conversation. With an abundance of fishing harbours along the coast it is no suprise that the sea harvest is the inspiration for many classic Catilan dishes. Spanish seafood dishes include Paella - (a meat, fish and rice dish) and Escalivada - (a cold salad of baked/roasted vegetables with an olive oil dressing) The sparkling Cava wine is synonymous with this region, and don't forget to try a glass or two of Sangria( a drink made with wine, brandy, lenonade and fruit) The local beer is San Miguel and is available in most bars and restaurants.
