| General Information | | Valletta lies about 7 miles from the airport and is the islands capital. Built in 1556, there's a wealth of history to see here, with various cultural sites as well as a commercial centre. Good standard hotels with the larger ones lying on the outskirts, offer the majority of accommodation you will find here, but there's no beach, so swimming is restricted to the hotels. Plenty of shops to cater for all your holiday needs, and even a Marks and Spencers, ensure there's enough to keep you going throughout the day, but the nights can be very quiet. | Local Food | | Valletta is the capital of Malta, and as with most popular European destinations it's traditional food is influenced by the many tourists that visit their country. You'll find plenty of British style meals available here, from burgers to pizzas and all served with chips if that's how you like it. Look around, and you'll also find the odd Italian, French or Chinese restaurant, but you must try the local specials like: Lampuki pie ( filleted Dorado mixed with vegetable, rice & pasta ), Timpana (pasta in meat sauce with a pastry top ) and Pastizzi ( cheese wrapped in pastry ). Imported beers can be bought in nearly all the bars, but the local beers and lagers are very high quality, as are the red and white wines. |
