|Germany is divided into 16 states and has a population of over 80 million people, with the previously divided city of Berlin now the capital. The many regions of Germany each have their own specific features and character. To the west of the country is the Black Forest, Rhineland and the industrial Ruhr region, while further south is Bavaria complete with the Bavarian Alps. Bavaria has excellent winter sports facilities, combined with plenty of snow, and hosts many winter sports meetings. Munich is one of the most popular and famous cities in Bavaria and in October you can enjoy yourself at the famous Munich Beer Festival (Oktoberfest). Many German people head to the small islands in the north of Germany which are well known locally for their 'health resorts'. Hamburg in northern Germany is also popular with tourists of all nationalities. Eastern Germany has many lakes and river basins complimented by hills and mountains, the most popular probably being the Elbe Valley.|
