| General Information | | Costa Almeria is situated on the south facing coast, east of the Costa Del Sol and approximately five miles from the airport. There are plenty of sandy beaches and sandy coves, all below a backdrop of high mountains of the coastal range. Almeria itself was a Roman port with a Moorish castle and cathedral. Nearly all its main resorts and beaches are purpose built. | Local Food | | The Costa Almeria has numerous restaurants and bars which serve English cuisine but it is well worth seeking out authentic Spanish restaurants which serve a variety of regional specialities. Spain is the home of the 'tapa' which are a variety of foods such as cheeses, hams, omlettes, dips, baby casseroles etc which accompany drinks and good conversation. For the more adventurous why not try 'callos' - a tripe, ham and sausage stew, salt cod fritters, 'chorizo' - spicey sausage, Serano ham or aubergine fritters. There are also classic Spanish dishes to try such as 'paella','suquet' - a rich seafood stew with rice and vegetables and 'escalada' - a cold salad of baked/grilled vegetables with an olive oil dressing. Spain produces some of the best wines in the world. Both local and other Spanish wines are inexpensive. The Spanish 'Cava' is refreshing and 'Muscatel' a sweet dessert wine is produced in this area. The local beer is 'San Miguel' which is very good and widely available. |
