General Information
Kos is the second largest of the Dodecanese islands lying three miles off the Turkish coast. With it's smooth coastline and one good natural harbour at the capital Kos town, it rarely exceeds 6 miles in width, although it is 27 miles long. With only one mountain, Mount Dikeos, the rest of the terrain is primarily flat. Tourism dominates the economy, and the majority of the tourist accommodation is concentrated around Kos town itself. With the exception of Kardamena, most of the other resorts are spread along the eastern half of the north coast. 16 miles west of Kos town you will find the airport at Antimacheia. Beach life is very good, with long expanses of sand and beautiful blue waters, while Thermes, a black sand beach, is noted for its hot springs.
Local Food
As with all the most popular European destinations, you will find British type bars, restaurants and tavernas, serving regular helpings of the sort of food you could find in any seaside resort back home. All meals come with chips, if that’s how you like it, but if you look around, there's Chinese, Italian and French restaurants to try too. If it's the more traditional Greek style food your'e looking for, grilled or fried Chicken, Lamb, Squid and Octopus can be enjoyed with fantastic salads sprinkled in olive oil. Mezedes( a combination of local dishes), Souvlaki( kebabs), Stifado( local stew) and Fish are dishes found throughout the island and are well worth trying. The food is often locally produced, so why not try some fresh Kos melon, figs, oranges and olives. The Greek salads with crumbly feta cheese and Kos lettuce are also delicious. Most resorts provide a great choice of beers, wines and spirits but expect to pay more for the imported ones.
