| General Information | | Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, being 16 miles wide and 30 miles long. With outstanding scenery that includes pine forests, caves and subterranean lakes, it also boasts one of Greece's largest mountains - Mount Aenos.Kefalonia airport serves the cluster of tourist resorts that where built along the south-western coast, after the island was nearly destroyed in the 1953 earthquake. Kefalonia is known for it's Blue sea and great beaches, and is more suitable for families than the young party loving type. | Local Food | | The island of Kefalonia is untainted by mass tourism. Food is typically Greek, grilled or fried chicken, lamb, squid and octopus can be enjoyed with fantastic salads sprinkled in Olive oil. Mezedes( a combination of local dishes), Souvlaki( kebabs), Stifado( local stew) and Fish are dishes found throughout the island, and are well worth trying. Why not start your meal with some aubergines and courgettes deep-fried in batter, or meat, rice and tomato pie, both of which are Kefalonian specialities. The cost of wining and dining here is still refreshingly inexpensive. The local Robola white wine is reputed to be one of the best in Greece. Most bars provide a great choice of beers, wines and spirits but expect to pay more for the imported ones. |
