General Information
Crete is the most southerly of the Greek islands, lying 200 miles off the coast of Africa. 160 miles long, and about 35 miles wide, it is also the largest. Most of the tourist resorts are on the north coast, served by 2 airports. The capital city Heraklion has the first, 2 miles east, and the other is 9 miles east of the major town of Chania. A main highway links the towns along the north coast where you will find most of the tourist resorts like Aghios Nikolaos and Hersonissos. There are countless mythological sites to explore, and along with it's many beaches of soft golden sand, and it's lively and sophisticated resorts, it is no surprise that holiday makers to Crete return again and again.
Local Food
As with all the most popular European destinations, you will find a massive amount of British type bars, pubs and tavernas, serving regular helpings of the sort of food you could find in any seaside resort back home. All meals come with chips, if that’s how you like it, but if you look around, there's Chinese, Italian and French restaurants to try too. If it's the more traditional style your looking for, grilled or fried Chicken, Lamb, Squid and Octopus can be enjoyed with fantastic salads sprinkled in Olive oil. Mezedes( a combination of local dishes), Souvlaki( kebabs), Stifado( local stew) and Fish are dishes found throughout the country and are well worth trying. Most restaurants provide a great choice of beers, wines and spirits but expect to pay more for the imported ones.
