General Information
Aghios Stefanos (Avliotes). The north west corner of Corfu has some of the best sandy beaches. Aghios Stefanos has a wide stretch of soft sand, reminiscent of Cornwall, the sea is shallow and safe. The sandy soil of this area means there are no rugged, stoney vistas like the north east, but rolling hills and shady olive groves perfect for exploring on foot. It is found after driving through twisting narrow roads which suddenly open out above the bay, with views across to the off lying Diapontian islands. The village has become divided between the old part of the village which grew up around the church and old harbour ( a new one has been built around the corner) and the new village on the cliffs where new apartments and complexes have sprung up. An ideal spot for families who want a - get away from it all - holiday, in which the beach and the sun play a large role. It is a place that, once found, is hard to keep away from, proven by the many who return year in year out. They are inclined to be secretive about where they go on holiday, keeping it from the world of mass tourism. There are a few shops, a good number of tavernas and a couple of bars. There are a few boat trips to the islands and the well known beauty spot of Paleokastritsa, and a skimpy bus service to the lively resort of Sidari, and to Corfu Town. Car hire is the best way to explore from here
Local Food
San Stefanos is a quiet fishing village. It has good variety of bars, restaurants and tavernas serving menus ranging from cosmopolitan to Greek. Traditional Greek food of Mezedes( a combination of small local dishes), Stifado( local stew ), and Souvlaki( kebabs), can all be found here, and don't forget to try the Greek salad with it's famous olives and local goats cheese, it is delicious. Greece's favourite alcoholic drink is 'ouzo' which is made from pressed grape skins, herbs and berries. It is ideally drunk straight and sipped slowly.
