| General Information | | Halkidiki extends from the northeastern mainland into the Aegean sea. With it's three distinctive finger shaped peninsulas, Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos, it has a mixture of vineyards, pine forests and some therapeutic springs. Most of the main holiday resorts are clustered on the eastern side of the Kassandra peninsula, with Sithonia having a few and Athos being the home of the local monks. The airport is 10 miles south of the Thessaloniki city, and there are plenty of golden and white sandy beaches, most of whom are Blue Flag. | Local Food | | Traditional Greek food of Mezedes( a combination of local dishes), Sttifado( local stew) and Souvlaki( kebabs) are all here in abundance. Grilled or fried Squid, Octopus and Chicken, served with a great salad and a sprinkling of Olive oil is a firm favorite aswell. In the bars, a taste of home can be provided with Pizzas, Burgers etc. all on the menu, and all served with a generous helping of chips. There's even a Sunday roast. The odd French, Chinese or Italian restaurant can be found if you look hard enough, and the local red and white wines make a fine accompaniment with any meal. |
