General Information
Lanzarote is a dry and fairly flat island, whose bizarre landscape has been shaped by volcanic activity. There are still some areas where heat still generates, most notably Fire Mountain, found within the Timanfaya national park. Only 40 miles long and no more than 14 miles wide, there are regions of green hills and golden sandy beaches. Arrecife in the east is the capital, and an important fishing port and the airport is 4 miles west of the town. Most people come to Lanzarote for the sun, sea and the sand, and they never go away disappointed. Behind the beaches are well equipped resorts, that blend in beautifully with the surrounding countryside, and the waterfront with it's palm fringed cafes and shops make for a really enjoyable holiday.
Local Food
A great choice of friendly bars and reastaurants, ensure the all year round tourist trade has plenty of options when it comes to eating out. Cuisine in the Canaries is Mediterranean in style and is inspired by the natural produce available. There are Spanish restaurants, international restaurants, and also fast food outlets to cater for all tastes. If you want to sample some real Canarian food then look out for the name 'tipico' in country-style restaurants. Don't forget to try the local 'tapas' bars offering a variety of small tasty dishes of food for you to try with a nice glass of wine. 'Sancocho' (fish stew), or 'paella' (seafood, meat and rice dish) are also popular and worth a try. The Canaries produce delicious home made wines of the 'Malmsey' variety, most of which tend to be sweet, and the rum honey liqueur is lovely to round off a meal
