Description
Although Sweden covers a huge area it only has a population of about 9 million people. This is partly because almost half the country is forested whilst to the south of the country there are thousands of lakes, the largest being Lake Vanern which is over 2000 square miles!! The capital of Sweden is Stockholm which is built on a string of islands. There are many tourist attractions in Stockholm, notably the many boat trips available and the 50 or so museums that can be found in the city. 8 of these museums, including the Vasa Museum, can be found on the island of Djurgarden which is accessible by bus or ferry. Other cities that are popular with tourists include Gothenburg, Malmo and Halmstad. Copenhagen in Denmark can now be reached by a frequent train service, or by car (toll payable), using the recently built bridge that connects with Malmo in the south. Halmstad, further up the west coast from Malmo, attracts visitors to its beaches in the summer due to the relatively hot climate there. Further north the temperatures are much lower particularly in winter when it can get very cold. The unit of currency is the Swedish Kronor.
