The first thing you should know about Iceland is that it is nowhere near as cold as its name implies. The average January day in Reykjavik is about the same temperature as it is in New York City. This means that a winter trip is just as viable as a summer visit, and the costs are much lower. Whatever time of year, make sure to bring a bathing suit, as there are many geothermal pools throughout the country. Another consideration about planning a trip to Iceland is the length of the days. During the summer months it will never get truly dark, and in the middle of winter there will only be around four to five hours of sunlight. However, during the winter months there is a chance of seeing the Aurora borealis, which is quite the sight.
