Until the seventies Guardalavaca was just a quiet sleepy little town, located on the northeastern coast of Holguin Province in the east of Cuba. How times have changed. These days it's a well-established resort with an enviable reputation. The resort is still growing, yet its current small but perfectly formed status ensures a low-key atmosphere, which for most visitors is a big part of the appeal. The star attraction remains the beach, with sand the colour and texture of caster sugar, shelving gently into warm turquoise waters. Such inviting waters account for many of the most popular past times, including sailing and scuba diving. Royal palm trees line the beach at convenient intervals offering welcome shade in which to snooze away a relaxing afternoon, or a chance to read your book away from the sun's glare. If you can summon up the energy to venture out away from the beach, you'll discover further natural delights in the form of green rolling hills and vast fields packed full of towering sugar cane. It's a crop that thrives in the glorious climate, and proves that in the countryside at least, little has changed. Another reason to plump for Guardalavaca as your chosen resort is its close vicinity to the colourful towns of Banes and Gibara. These can provide a good introduction to Cuban culture, as Banes is Cuba's so called archaeological capital and the picturesque fishing town of Gibara boasts plenty of rustic charm.
