Description Situated inland and north of the main beach resorts, Evangelistria offers a totally different experience to the beach resorts. At 450 metres above sea level, the area offers stunning views of the island as well as out to sea.
The main man made attraction of the area is the monastery that was built in the late 18th century. It has been a safe haven as well as a source of inspiration for the local islanders in times of crisis over the centuries. Visitors are welcomed by the monks who still live and work in the monastery, where you can buy goods such as the local wine brewed in the monastery.
Evangelistria has a rugged charm and as such is a popular location for walkers as well as bird watchers. The area is particularly scenic in early May when an abundance of flowers blossom.
The area has not been developed as much as the beach resorts, and some of the roads are not as developed as some less experienced drivers would wish. So if you are hiring a car please be aware of the differing road conditions in the northern part of the island.
