Cuba is the largest Caribbean island, about the size of England with a population of over 11 million. You can fly direct from the UK to Havana, the capital, which has been designated a 'World Heritage Site'. One of Havanas best known habitants was the writer Ernest Hemingway. His former home is now a museum, and although you can visit and look through the windows, you cannot go inside. The El Morrro Castle, part of the city's fortress, provides superb views of Havana. Cuba's main beach resort is Varadero which has beautiful powdery white sands and clear blue seas. It takes approximately 2.5 hours by road to reach Varadero from Havana but the journey is worth it if you want to relax and chill out. As Varadero is a developing resort there is inevitably some building work going on, however with 12 miles of white sandy beaches to choose from it does not detract from the beauty of the place. Cuba has a hot, sub-tropical climate all year, with most of the annual rainfall coming between May and October. December to April has the least rainfall and it is also slightly cooler in those months.
