Barbados is the most easterly of the Islands in the Caribbean. Until 1966, when Barbados declared independence, the island was under British sovereignty. This is still strongly reflected today in the capital Bridgetown which even has its own scaled down Trafalgar Square and cricket ground at Kensington Oval. The white sandy beaches are beautiful both on the east coast (Atlantic) and the west coast (Caribbean). The west coast, where the sea is calm and various shades of blue, is the place to come for water sports. Barbados has its own international airport so you can fly direct from the UK. Eating out in Barbados is a delight if you enjoy seafood or the local 'Bajan' cuisine, why not try The Cliff reputed to be the best restaurant on the island. Barbados enjoys abundant sunshine all year round with an average of at least 8 hours per day during the 'wet season' (July - November) rising to 10 hours per day from January through to March.
