Description
Aegina island is known locally as the Greek island that is still Greek, and has not been spoiled by mass tourism. Aegina island is only a 40 minute "Flying Dolphin" catermaran ride from Piraeus, Athens - there are also several ferries to Aegina. Aegina Island is famous for its' pistachio nuts (which are the most tasty), its local fish, but you will also find grapes, olives, figs and almonds in local production. Also the austere clay pottery of the island is an excellent buy. It's not difficult to find a nice place to swim on Aegina; there are various organised beaches with sunbeds and umbrellas, beach games and beach bars. There are also many deserted beaches where you can swim in the crystal clear water. Aegina town, where the main port is , is 14 kms from Aghia Marina and can be easily reached by local bus. The fish market on the front, opposite the harbour is worth a visit.
