Gouves lies 12 miles from the airport and is one of the areas developed with the tourist in mind. A good mixture of hotel and apartments can be found here, and although the shopping is not bad, a bigger variety can be seen in the capital Heraklion. There are decent beaches made up of a coarse sand, that are home to a variety of different water sports, while at night a lot of the best entertainment is provided by the hotels, although there are enough bars and tavernas in the centre for a nice evening stroll. Not the greatest of places for the serious shopper, and a trip into Heraklion is advised.
