Address: Borgo, Corsica, France
A luxuriant garden with sea views, an incredible pool and a stylish and unusual interior make Villa Spunta di Sole a lovely property. The garden is imbued with an exotic feel by the fronds of palm-trees and Tahitian mimosas, and this tropical, colonial flavour is even stronger inside, due to Mme Mailles passion for interior design, particularly of oriental inspiration, and M. Mailles family history: two generations of settlers in China, starting off with a grandfather who was a fur trapper in Mongolia. Family photos in sepia, Chinese watercolours, and various objets dart hail from this long Asian interlude, and together with the beautiful and comfortable furnishings give the villa an especially relaxed and languid ambience which is just what is needed for unwinding. Spunta di Sole means sunrise, and from its hillside perch the house has fine views of the sun rising over the Tyrhennian sea below. Monsieur Mailles business is pools, and for their villa he was inspired by Moorish features, using arches, wrought iron, large terracotta urns and lanterns. Beside the pool is a lovely arched pool house for shade, in true Moorish style. Villa Spunta di Sole is the Mailles own house, but with the family grown up its four bedrooms, two bathrooms, spacious lounge, dining corner and fitted kitchen are now too big for a still working couple. Hence this gorgeous home is available for our guests. Set below the old village of Borgo (which has a restaurant), and about a kilometre above the road which leads south out of Bastia (which has plenty of shops and a number of restaurants), Villa Spunta di Sole offers avid explorers a comfortable and attractive base. Guests staying here enjoy easy access to the Castagniccia, the Casinca (with arguably the prettiest villages in Corsica), Bastia, Cap Corse, St Florent, Asco and Corte. Calvi and the Balagne can also easily be visited on a day trip and Bastia airport is only about 6km away, so that departure day is relatively painless, except for the leaving behind of Villa Spunta di Sole. |
