Mallorca�s landscape varies from dramatic mountains in the northwest across the fertile plains to the coves and superb sandy beaches in the east. Palma, on the southern tip of the island, is the seat of the autonomous government of the Balearic Islands. Here you�ll find a choice of shops, restaurants and nightlife as well as sightseeing, including the magnificent Bellver Castle and one of the biggest marinas in the Med. Old Palma is typified by the area immediately surrounding the cathedral. Mazes of narrow alleys and cobblestoned streets echo the era when Palma was one of the chief ports in the Mediterranean. Today Palma is a bustling city whose massive tourist industry has more than made up for its decline as a major seaport. Trendy and chic, Palma draws in the more discerning clientele to its fine tapas and unique nighclubs. Majorca itself attracts the largest number of visitors of any place in the Balearics and is famed for resorts such as Alcudia, Puerto Pollensa, Daia and Formentor.
