Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, measuring 60 miles long and up to 37 miles wide. It is dominated by a extinct volcano, Mount Teide, that is almost 12 miles in diameter and is located in the national park of Las Canadas. With it's lush tropical forests, sheer cliffs and beaches of both dark volcanic and golden sand, the island has just about everything. The green and humid north coast, whose main resort is Puerto de la Cruz, contrasts with the southern coast, which is hot and dry and boasts the resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Santa Cruz in the north east is the capitol, with the airport situated 38 miles to the south. | |
