| Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is the most popular tourist destination in South East Asia. Thailand's capital, Bangkok is a fascinating blend of ancient and modern. There are many great places worth visiting in Bangkok provided you can tolerate the heat, noise and pollution. The most famous landmark in Bangkok has to be the Grand Palace and once inside the huge complex it is hard to imagine the noise outside. The Grand Palace is surrounded by high white walls and there is probably no more evocative group of buildings in the world. There are many other temples worth visiting. The Chao Phraya River runs through Bangkok and there are many trips up and down the river, the more adventurous opting to travel in one of the locals boats and go down some of the side canals. Bangkok is well known for having some of the best hotels in the world amongst them The Oriental and The Royal Orchid Sheraton. The night life in Bangkok is world famous with liveliest action being found in the Patpong district which is full of bars, clubs and massage parlours. In stark contrast to Bangkok there are many stunning beach resorts with excellent diving and water sports. You can also find totally deserted beaches particularly in the Southern part of Thailand. Popular beach resorts in Thailand include Pattaya, two hours drive from Bangkok and quite lively, Hua Hin, Phuket (a one hour flight from Bangkok), Ko Samui and Cha-am. After a few days in the capital most visitors treat themselves to a bit of luxury and relaxation at one of these beach resorts. In the north of Thailand about 430 miles from Bangkok is Chiang Mai, the countries second largest town. However it is small in comparison to Bangkok and surrounded by beautiful countryside. | |
