Mouikis hotel is a working hotel not a tourist hotel. Apart from the business people, passing workers staying the odd night, the majority of holiday visitors staying are regulars. This is our 20th year.
Rooms are spacious, very clean ( linen, bedding changed each day) comfortable. This is a family run hotel. Breakfast consists of a substantial buffet choice. Other staff have been there years which shows it is a happy workplace.
The hotel is central to the needs of the clients. There are no beaches near the hotel but there is a large harbour 50 metres away with local fishing boats, rich men's yachts, Liners & Caretta caretta (Turtles).
See my previous report. This year the hotel mouikis has been totally renovated. It's all new. An excellent holiday on all categories.
However for our return journey we were caught up in the Commie, Anarchist led strike and so we had problems at the airport. We arrived home 6 hrs late after an arduous period at the airport.(If u know Kefalonia airport u know what I mean).
I must say though the reps at the airport did a marvellous job so preventing bad tempers arising. This strike I feel has done a lot to harm the Greek Tourist Industry.
We have visited Kefallinia for the last 17 yrs as independant travellers (our second home) and always stayed at this working hotel. The owners & staff are now personal friends. The island as usual is a fantastic place to holiday. Over the years we have obviously seen many change, but usually only minor. However this year there were some dramatic changes. The island is fast becoming a millionaires' paradise which reflects on the steep rise in prices for everything. Meals are expensive, my particular tipple last year was 3 euros, this year 4 euros 50 for example. Car hire(essential to visit the best places) was very expensive.
The other main change was at the airport. It is too small to handle the increased amount of aircraft now arriving/leaving. We circled the airport for 1/2 hour before landing. On leaving the airport we had to check in 3 1/2-4 hours before the flight. Check in was open for your particular flight for one hr only. It was quick efficient but then you had to wait 3hrs before going to departures and this with about a cuple of hundred passengers for other flights. People on later flights had to queue outside until their booking desk was open. Having said all that My wife and I thouroughly enjoyed our stay & have already booked our room for next year.
