When my husband and I decided to take our 3yr old twins on a short vacation, we thought that Margarita would be a good choice. Our Travel agent said that Hotel Dunnes was 5 star!
The hotel is certainly not 5 star, maybe 2 stars! The bedroom floors are tiled with clay tiles so it was always very cold. The door to the balcony could not lock and I have 3 yrs old kids! There was one king size bed and the other was a made up pull-out couch.
We were told that the all inclusive package gave us access to all the resturants, however we were turn down at Luciano's because they are all about reservations only (please note that the sign outside said differentlt) and were told at Tilapia that we had to pay an excess of US$16/person.
My 3 days 2 nights stay was plagued by huge mosquitoes! To make a bad situation worst, the inward flight was delayed by 2 1/2 hrs and that to leave the island was delayed by 5 hrs!
I, just like many other people who were on this trip will NEVER visit Margarita again and we will certainly stay away from Dunnes Hotel anywhere else in the world!
We had a very bad time there. We had to move rooms 3 times, food was awfull and cold most of the time. Rooms were basic yet it says its a 4 star, we would say it,s only rates a 3 star and thats being kind. This was our honeymoon and it was ruined we are in the middle of a dispute with First Choice.
The Dunes hotel is a lovely clean well maintained hotel. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The food is good and well presented but sometimes was a little basic, however we always found something we enjoyed. The beach grill bar serves lovely fresh grilled fish.
The entertainment team work very hard. Most of the activities are based around the main pool, if you want peace & quiet go to the beach, its lovely with lots of shade available.
The sun is very hot, lots of people burned very badly when we were there, you need sunblock to be safe. There is always a strong breeze and this can fool you that it isnt so hot.... you have been warned!
The hotel has a banking facility, the rate in March was 2300 bolivars to $1.
The rooms are basic and clean, the only problem was we were on the ground floor of the first block as you enter the resort and it was noisy, the maids and guards talk loudly in the morning. If we had complained I'm sure they would have moved us but I didnt want to pack up 2 rooms again so said nothing. Other people on the 2nd & 3rd floor that we spoke to did not have problems with the noise.
I thoroughly recommend the 2 day trip to the Orinoco Delta and Canaima to see the Angel Falls and Tabletop mountains (Tepuis), its the adventure of a lifetime and costs approx $300 pp (Bolton)
