"We stayed at this hotel 7 years ago and loved every second. We booked a last minute deal to..."

We stayed at this hotel 7 years ago and loved every second. We booked a last minute deal to this hotel and have just arrived home. I have to say that the whilst the hotel and staff and wonderful the guests were and are total and utter MUPPETS!!

We arrived at the hotel just before midnight and whilst they didn't have our booking it only took 5 minutes to sort out and the room was lovely - clean and spacious.

We decided to grab a drink from the disco and then some pizza to be met by a guest screaming abuse at the staff that he wanted chips and not pizza. It was 1.30am. I was disgusted and left to go back to our room.

The food was good all week and I always found something to eat despite being an extremely fussy veggie. However guests were constantly complaining that they didn't want to eat seaweed - the seaweed by the way was scrummy spinach.

The hotel offers a wind range of food with pizza, baguettes and chips all day by the pool.

Ice cream is free for all in the main restaraunt lunch and dinner time.

I have to say that some of you really looked like you wouldn't waste away by missing lunch!!

The pool is kept very clean despite people leaving dirty nappies, cig butts, spilt drinks and half eaten food - how disgusting and the poor staff - if this was you be ashamed!!

The flies were not really a problem around us as we were some of the clean guests.

The beach was lovely and yes full of seaweed but this is not the hotels fault - what would you like them to do to?? Have someone siving the seaweed for you all day?? I think not!! The pedalos ect were free so take advantage.

The trips were ok - the quad biking was good but make sure that you have adequate insurance and costs ?20.00 per person for 90 mins. The Figura park was lovely but very expensive for a 2 hour wander and the dolphin show is NOT included and costs an extra ?20.00 per adult and ?10.00 for a child for 15 minutes and so not worth it.

Take lots of change to tip the rangers as they will allow you to have photos handling the animals.

MY TIPS:

TIP the staff at the beginning of the week to expect the best service such as your waiter, maid and bar man. I didn't queue for my drinks and had as many as I wanted and this cost me a grand total of 20dn (?10.00) for a week - well worth it.

So, I would go back again but would dread seeing all the guests who think all inclusive is drink and eat as much as you can before you pass out abusing and insulting staff on the way.

Please cover up in the retsraunt and do not abuse the staff when they politely ask you to.

Please and thank yous go along way - something I did not hear very often!!

Please also control your children and do not allow them to run havoc round the other guests.

We had an excellent holiday at Houda beach, and cannot wait to book up and return there. Our parties age ranged from 10 up to 61 and there was never once a complaint of boredom from anyone.

The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful and worked extremly hard to ensure that we had a great holiday, which we did.

The food is locally produced so changes with the seasons but was always cooked well, and there was a good variety. The rooms are very basic but acceptable, and were cleaned daily.

We read some horrible reports about houda before we went but i would recommend this hotel to everyone who wants a good family based holiday.

"We chose this hotel for a number of reasons, mainly as we were taking my wife’s parents..."

We chose this hotel for a number of reasons, mainly as we were taking my wife’s parents who are 70+ and not in the best of health. So we needed a destination with short flight times, short transfer times, low rise buildings and on a level (not hilly) site but with some where to lounge out in the sun and shade with somewhere nearby for short trips out.

Having been to Tunisia several years ago, we knew what to expect & based our booking on our knowledge and what I found on this website (& others). For the (reasonable) price we paid, the holiday more than met our expectations.

The hotel staff were mostly very friendly and helpful with a couple of minor exceptions, it takes all sorts! The hotel is a little out of the way but is close enough for a cheap taxi ride if you want to venture further afield, taxis are always available opposite the entrance of the hotel, We took a trip all the way up to El Kantaoui which cost £6 during the day & £9 at night, for the Taxi NOT per person.

Cleanliness was taken as granted, with our rooms and all communal areas kept very clean, we noted the pools were cleaned and water quality tested every day.

Food, whilst not of the best quality, was well presented with a reasonable choice every day in the main self- service buffet restaurant, the cakes and pastries were particularly good. You are allocated a table for lunch and evenings for the whole of your stay, with free use for breakfast. If nothing pre- prepared suited, there was always the option of freshly made omelette or pancake.

Two ‘speciality’ restaurants are available on site, one Tunisian and one Italian, which can be booked once each per stay. The food & wine was of better quality and served at the table However, on our visit to the Italian restaurant, it appeared new staff were affecting service standards and orders were a little slow in arriving, with some drinks orders failing to appear without further prompting. The service in the Tunisian restaurant was, however, beyond reproach.

A snack bar is also available beyond the pool area, opening from lunchtime to late afternoon serving panini’s, pizza, chips, burgers & kebab meat but served in a small bloomer style loaf. Although not directly comparable to those available in the UK, I personally preferred the meat served here (the burger having a little spice in the mix!) and the bread was very good, it made a change from the buffet restaurant & the ‘sameiness’ you tend to get at lunch and for the evening meal. It was also supposed to be available late at night, well beyond us old folks bedtimes!

There was a wide variety of drinks available. Juices were of the squash variety, not fresh, but usually chilled & soft drinks were available at all times with the local equivalent of coke, fanta & sprite. Bottled water was also available to all-inclusive guests with water coolers also dotted around the site. There was a reasonable selection of alcoholic drinks available, as has been reported in the past these are not as strong as UK equivalents This was no bad thing as during our stay there were a small number of (mainly UK!) visitors who tried their best to drink literally all day. The local beer is a little frothy but served cold & is refreshing on a hot day. Spirits had little kick but for casual drinking fine, what was new was tonic water from that well known drinks company, so a G&T went down well and the tonic water itself was a welcome change from the sugary soft drinks through the day.

The Tunisians have a long history of winemaking so the plonk is reasonable, the cheap brand usually served was fine after the second glass or so, that served in the speciality restaurants was a cut (or two!) above the norm, the red especially so. Someone must have made a mistake part way through the week as the Rose wine served at the bars was listed as an extra at £6 a bottle, very good & became out tipple for the week.

The large, free form pool itself was of good size, with sloping access from one site at stepped access from the other, with a rubber lining (not tiled), a separate small pool for the very young was also available. I can never figure out why these pools always feel so cold despite the sun & heat though! keeps you cool in the midday sun however. There was always somewhere to stretch out with sunbeds and chairs available around the pool and gardens, it may be more crowded in peak season though. The hotel also has its own beach area with sunshades etc. An indoor pool is also available, fortunately we never had to try it. As a bonus, the hotel boasted its own small water park, with four water slides for all to use & a separate small slide & pool for the toddlers.

The entertainment team were friendly and enthusiastic but not pushy, some may find the choice limited but seemed reasonable for the size of hotel. A kids club was also available for the little ones. We never got to see the shows as we were sat drinking & chatting with the in- laws and then needed an hours wind- down period having a quite read (& some more of that Rose!) However, listening to others, the shows were cheesy but enthusiastic!

What was a pleasant change from our last time in Tunisia was the increase in fixed-price shopping, haggling is fine when you’re in the mood but not day-in, day-out, and the reaction of the sellers on site who were very polite & responded very well to a firm, but polite !no thank you! rather than having selective deafness & badgering you all day. They must also have amazing memories as we were never approached by a seller on site more than once.
We found the two small shops on site to have prices as good as the official fixed price shop in Sousse, with one or two items we didn’t see elsewhere.

In all, for a week of relaxation in the sun, we’d recommend this location to anyone.

Our holiday at the HOUDA GOLF was really good. Everything about the hotel was brill just a down side on the food, should have a more English variety. Apart from that we had a really good time in Tunisia. It was one of our best holidays.

I have just returned from two weeks at the Houda hotel, and it was fantastic. The animation team were amazing and made my holiday very memorable. The hotel itself was lovely and we could not have asked for anything better. Everything was self contained within the complex and there really was no need to go out of the hotel if you didn't want to as there was something for everyone within the hotel from watersports, archery, water polo, beach volley ball, water areobics, darts, the list goes on. And the hotel mini club was amazing for the children, they loved every minute of it. I would have to say that it is the best hotel i have ever stayed in.

I would like to mention the Animation team as they were fantstic with the guests, they are on the go 24/7 and always smiling. I would reccomend this hotel for anyone looking for a fun filled and relaxing holiday. I am looking to go again in August time!!

"I read alot of reviews before our departure but I went to houda with an open mind. I thought..."

I read alot of reviews before our departure but I went to houda with an open mind. I thought that it cannot be that bad. However to my disapointment It was.

Me, my wife & two children (4 & 9) arrived at the Houda Golf & Beach Club on 26th Aug 2007 at around 11.30am. We were already delayed by 3 hours, so we were a bit restless. Unfortunately the room was not ready on arrival and we had to wait 2 hours for it to be prepared.

Room 1:
When we finally did get our room, it was just 2 rooms along from being the furthest away from the centre of the Hotel. First thing I noticed was a socket hanging off a wall, with the celotape apparently not enough to fix it to the wall. View out of window was exquisite, we were facing the road & a building site with a lovely 100ft Crane! It was so picturesque and peaceful.

The room had an upstairs where the children could sleep. However the stairs were almost vertical, so my 4 year old had no option but to sleep downstairs. There was a window in the upstairs, I whipped the curtains back expecting a slightly higher view of the building site, however it was not even that good. There was no view just a 3 foot unplastered wall staring at me. There was also no plug for the bath which was really handy with small children.

Room 2:
We changed the room for a family room. Which was quite respectable although still very basic.

Pool 1:
Unless you get up in the dark, don’t bother going to the main pool behind the reception. Its was totally over-crowded. Did not go to this pool once other than to get food out of the snack bar.

Pool 2 Slides:
The slides are probably the only thing that is good about this hotel, however my kids were getting bored of these after about a week. One point I must bring up was. A little child had an accident on the bridge connecting the two pools (bad tummy), over a week later the outlines of excrement could still be seen, nicely baked onto the tiles.

Beach:
I was expecting a nice clear sea with lovely beach. Wrong! The Thames looks cleaner.

The restaurant:
With over a 1000 rooms, it was manic. Don't bother queuing up nicely for your chosen food as the French will just go straight to the front of your queue anyway. There is only 1 cutting board & 1 knife for bread for approx 2000 people, you can imagine what the queue’s were like.

Entertainment Staff:
They were really friendly, however their shows were awful. Soon as the mini disco finishes leave.

The Smell:
The constant smell of raw sewage was unbelievable.

Illness:
There was so many people ill that in the second week. I witnessed them testing the ice in the drinks, the water in the pool, and the food. One poor lady was so ill that she was on a drip! Vomiting, bad stomachs & ear infections were the order of the day!

Overall summery
1-10. The 1 was for the slides and weather combined.

"Well where do i start, i couldn't find anything wrong with the hotel, and the food was good,..."

Well where do i start, i couldn't find anything wrong with the hotel, and the food was good, being a chef i would like it to have been better but the food was palatable. My main criticism was the locals when we was out and about, we had no sooner left the hotel when the taxi drivers at the front gate wouldn't take no for a answer, on our second day we decided to go to Sousse for the day which turned out to be just three hours we met that many people that worked at our hotel the staff must have been on strike because why where they not at work in the middle of the day, we met a man who conned my husband out of 20 dinars not that much but it was the way it was done. All i can say don't buy a bottle of coke from him he is a con man. We went into the markets and it was like running the gauntlet get in and out as fast as you can, if we bought everything that they asked of us we would have needed a plane to ourselves to fetch it home. I have never been anywhere in the world where i have felt really frightened but that is how i felt in Tunisa i would not ever go there again.
On a better note their zoo and zulu night was the best day of the holiday i can recommend the trip it was well worth the money.

Just got back from the Houda Beach Hotel, I was surprised to be honest. There was a party of six Adults ages from 21 to 51 and we all enjoyed it very much. All though the rooms are basic, they were very clean, towels and bed linen changed daily. The food was really good especially the lunch and evening meal, breakfast was what you would expect for a foreign country but having said that you were spoilt for choice and the food was tasty at all meals. The staffs were excellent at reception, the cleaners, the waiters, and the kid’s entertainers worked extremely hard non-stop to please the kids and adults, always courteous.

New Years Eve they put on a spectacular Gala Meal, everybody worked extremely hard to make the event a wonderful experience for the guests. In addition, the food was wonderful all seven courses, each lady received a red Rose and everyone was made to feel special.

The only thing that bothered me was the lack of non-smoking space, as an X Smoker I do go on a bit about the subject, but the reception were everyone meets can get very smoky and is not very pleasant. However, to be fair the dinning room is strictly non smoking which is nice and there is a small area for non-smokers, but is not large enough.

Tunisia was different to what I had experienced in the past, and whilst I felt intimidated by my shopping experience I would still recommend it as a warm friendly Country were you are made to feel welcome by hard working, caring people.

My final note on the Houda Beach I would definitely return, it as great facilities and all the staff work extremely hard to please everybody and make your stay in Tunisia memorable what more could you ask for. Thank you to everybody from Thompson’s whom we booked with, their Airline who we flew with, their Reps who did a marvellous job during our stay, and lastly all the members of staff at the Houda, Jan who was so helpful, Abdul our waiter, our cleaners and all others who worked tirelessly to keep the Houda working for all.

I absolutley loved this holiday! Me and my best friend are 18, my mum and her 2 friends are 40 and there wa something for all of us! It is so relaxing and the people there are sooo friendly!

It was not the most clean and exquisite hotel i have ever been to but i wasent expecting it to be as it was only a 3* but for the price and star it was very good!

I would recommend anyone to go but you have to go with an open mind and just enjoy it without complaining because dont forget... you have paid for a 3* hotel!

Also if you go to houda and want somewhere to go for a drink and dance outide the hotel.. go to Safari club out of the front gates and walk to the left for 2 minutes.

I loved it and would definalty go again!!!! :D

"After reading some of the reports prior to going to the Houda I was a bit worried and had..."

After reading some of the reports prior to going to the Houda I was a bit worried and had every right to be. The reception area of the hotel is very grand but the staff are not very welcoming. The mand dealing with our arrival couldn't even smile or respond to any questions we had.We were led through dimly lit corridors where we struggled to keep up with the handyman taking us to our room . There are no lifts.
The room was very basic but clean. As was the bathroom - some of the fittings were needing renewed and came away from the wall when taking towels down.
The pool area was clean and there were plenty of sunbeds but you had to be down early to get there before the Europeans, some of whom reserved sunbeds and didn't go near them until the afternoon - very annoying.
The animation team were poor. Having been in Tunisia 2 years ago (Port el Kantaoui) we were expecting the same level of enthusiasm from the animation staff as we had before and were so disappointed. The activities on offer didn't change from day-to-day and were often misleading, eg Tai Chi was only aerobics to oriental music! The selection of music was extremely limited - only 3 CDs - their own mix, Robbie Williams and an 80s mix. I have to admit the Children's entertainer was excellent with the kids but did object to them running through the hotel reception area in the evenings when we were trying to have a drink and chat with other guests.
I don't even want to start on about the food, it was so bad. They certainly don't cater for British guests. I know we were abroad and don't expect to get the same food as we get at home but everyone we spoke to was complaining about the food. I lived on chips and bread for the last 3 days and my husband refused to go into the restaurant as it was making him feel ill - that was just looking at what was on offer. We are experienced travellers and this has to be the worst food we have ever had.
The waterpark was open but the slides were not in use unitl late on in the afternoon to start with then the client relations officer (who is English and a former rep) told them to open it earlier. There were no facilities at the water park for drinks so they had to be carried from the hotel. Apparently there will be facilities in the summer months but you have to pay for refreshments here - so be prepared.
Watch out for the taxi drivers outside the hotels. Some of them will try to rip you off. We 'escaped' from one who took us in to Monastir and was so arrogant and cheeky that we left him waiting and took another cab back to the hotel. We did pay him for the journey we in.
After our last holiday in Tunisia we were expecting the same level of service that we had in our last hotel but certainly did not get it. We only tipped one barman (unusual for us as we like to tip for good service)who was consistently friendly. The others hardly spoke.
Do try the Quad Biking on offer at the reception area. It was excellent.
The brochure rated this hotel as 3 Stars but I would struggle to even give it 2 and will not be recommendng it to anyone.
The main saving grace for this holiday was the weather.
Do try the Quad Biking on offer at the Reception area. It was excellent. (Fife)
